Abstract

Bangladesh’s tourist attractions include archaeological sites, historical mosques and monuments, resorts, beaches, picnic spots, forests and tribal people, wildlife of various species etc. With the number of tourists coming to Sylhet growing by 8-10 % since 2005, the number has increased due to an increasing number of foreign tourists. Managing tourism, leisure and hospitality firms successfully requires an orientation into the conceptualization and implementation of essentials of service quality. Entirely satisfied foreign tourists shall return to the tourist spots they have visited and they will refer positive word-of-mouth to their near and dear ones. This research investigates some core factors that can affect satisfaction level of international tourists with specific reference to tourism & hospitality industry in Sylhet region of Bangladesh. Another objective is to investigate the reasons why local hotels are failing to attract more foreign tourists; what are the quality lacking for which foreign tourists are complaining about and for why they are not referring friends and families about the hotel. This study determines how SQ Gapfil model can be utilized to overcome such types of quality gaps in hospitality management industry.

Abstract

With the growing takeout-tea market in Taiwan, consumers have more diverse selections of products, and takeout-tea shops in return have launched a variety of products and promotions to meet the demand. However, in recent years, the takeout-tea market in Taiwan has saturated, the analysis of operating efficiency for all brands have become the important topic of business management. Therefore, this study selected main 12 franchised takeout-tea brands in Taiwan for the scale efficiency analysis. Moreover, this study deploys the data envelopment analysis (DEA) method for the efficiency analysis. Results of this study show that, for the franchised takeout-tea brands, pursuing either the high quality or simply low-cost can get the good scale efficiencies; in contrary, the unclear brand image or middle-class brand positioning may lead to relatively low scale efficiencies. Furthermore, the analytic structure of this paper can apply to practical studies on other chain franchised business.

Abstract

The study analyzed the influence of time on seaborne oil trade in Nigeria. It determined the trend of seaborne oil export and import trade in Nigeria. The key objectives of the study were to measure the influence of time on seaborne oil import and export trade in Nigeria, to compare seaborne oil export and import trade facilitated by Nigeria seaports and to estimate the relationship between seaborne oil trade and port revenue in Nigeria. Secondary data on port revenue, tonnages of seaborne oil export and import trade were obtained from the Central bank of Nigeria and used in carrying out the study. The statistical tools of trend analysis, simple regression analysis and independent sample t-test were used to analyze the data obtained.  It was found that the trend of seaborne oil export and import trade in Nigeria over the period covered by the study was increasing. The linear function showing the trend of seaborne oil export trade over the period covered in the study is: Y = 3123477666.230 + 1951150.588 + e. It was also found that time induces an increasing trend on seaborne oil import trade facilitated via the Nigeria seaport terminals. The linear model showing the relationship between seaborne oil import trade facilitated through the seaports and port revenue over the period is:Y = 180425475.184 + 12.177oilimporttrade – 0.316oilexportrade + e. Seaborne export oil trade has a mean value of 799310590.7000±39845685.83675 with a seaborne oil import trade of 14523981.8400±3396038.07534 facilitated over the time period covered in the study. Recommendations were given on how to further grow seaborne oil trade in Nigeria. The implication to port management is that to sustain the revenue earnings capacity of the seaports through oil import and export trade, investment in the infrastructure for handling oil cargo flow via the seaport should take increasing trend in line to the direction of trade flow.

Landslide Problem in Bangladesh: a review with Special focus on Chittagong Region

Authors:

Abstract

This article makes an effort to discuss several aspects of the assessment risk, effects and mitigation of landslides in Bangladesh. A considerable number of research works have been done in recent years regarding this topic and this article presents a summary review of some of the published works. Globally Bangladesh is recognized as one of the most vulnerable countries to natural calamities. Along with cyclones and floods; two most discussed and disastrous hazards of the country, landslides have caused the death of nearly 235 people in various informal settlements of Chittagong city and its adjacent urban centers since 1997. Ineffective hill management policy at the national level and weak enforcement by the local authorities has created space for growing many informal settlements along landslide prone hill slopes and foothills in Chittagong city. Based on the review of literature and published case records, it is recommended that the city of Chittagong should consider establishing a sustainable long-term landslide management plan. The practical use of this paper is that the future researcher can get a details geomorphological information of landslide which is very helpful for their research work.

Author:

Mohammed Moin Uddin Reza & Md. Rezaul Karim

Abstract

Audit expectation gap has always been a captivating literature to study in the accounting and auditing philosophy. The first study on audit expectation gap was carried in 1974 and since then several literatures have been developing to identify the evidence of audit expectation gap in different responsibility centers of auditors proposing how to reduce the gap from different perspectives. As the scope of auditing is kind of defined by definitions, we tend to believe that the expectation gap must be reducing with the adoption of audit knowledge and practices over times which must be working from both the auditors’ and users of financial statements’ end. This paper aims to find out the evidence of audit expectation gap in the literatures concentrating majorly on the 21st century and summarizing the proposals made to reduce the existing expectation gap. Certain research gaps have been traced through the study of literatures which will create further avenues for the researchers of audit expectation gap to work on.

Abstract

These days, there is a big variety of design packages on the supermarkets’ shelves. In the ever increasing competition of today’s global market, the designs need for effective product promotion is crucial. The product packaging has come to play a more important role as brand communication vehicle. By keeping the view of this reality, the research has been initiated with the objective to know the role of packaging by consumer during the purchase period in Kathmandu Valley. It is found that the major part of consumers’ attraction and color of package are the main visual elements whereas the product information is verbal elements while purchasing a product. Based on the research, equal relationship between consumers’ perception in product choice and image, color, information, design, font style is derived. However, a positive thinking and ever increasing trend about well-designed package shows the consumers’ inclination to high product quality.

Cobweb Model for the Stabilization of Vegetable Prices in Some Selected Villages of Noakhali District

Authors:

Binata Rani Sen, Md. Maznur Rahman & Mohammad Iqbal Hossain

Abstract

In this paper, a linear Cobweb model is used to analyze the phenomenon of commodity price fluctuations of vegetables in some selected villages of Noakhali district. The fluctuation of vegetable prices is normal in the market economy. The level of the price and the fluctuation not only has a significant influence on farmers and consumers, but a reasonable and stable price also has an irreplaceable effect on the safe running of the vegetable market. The assumptions for the model are (i) vegetables have no equal substitutes; (ii) there is no foreign competition. The analysis found that the slope of the demand function of the price was smaller/larger than the slope of the supply function of the price which means that the price and quantity supplied of the fresh vegetables would oscillate/indicate around a fixed price and also spiral inward/outward.

Abstract

Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) is an important avian pathogen which causes significant economic losses within layer poultry industry. To control of this economic losses, early and specific detection is necessary. A total of 48 (tracheal swabs, lungs and air sacs) samples were collected from different infected/suspected flocks causing respiratory distress. DNA was extracted and then, 16sRNA gene was amplified by PCR using species specific primers and identified 6 positive samples (12.5%). MG exhibited from tracheal swab, lung and air sac were 25, 6.25 and 6.25% respectively. Based on result, it is concluded that PCR using tracheal swab can be efficient for rapid screening and early detection of MG in layer chicken.

Abstract

The rapid growth of globalization of business has led to a rising need to “internationalize” human resource managers within the bank and organization. Many large multinational banks like HSBC now see the international management experience as a precondition for advancement to senior management positions. In the absence of effective selection method human resource and line managers continue to use a variety of imperfect methods to aid the task of predicting which applicant will be most successful in meeting the demands of the job and/ or are the best fit the work group and culture of the Bank and organization. This is the reason why effective and modern selection methods are very important for human resource department. This paper explains the picture of literature to the discussion of the selection process at HSBC Bank with an comparison between the United Kingdom and Bangladesh, and the impact of cultural variation in the selection procedure as well.

Abstract

Maritime policies like general transport policies over the years have remained a veritable tool for planning the development of the maritime transport sub-sector in Nigeria and other nations. Experience in most developing African countries has shown that African nations are not lacking in the development of well thought-out policy blue prints for the development of her maritime sectors; they  rather have poor policy implementation strategies as past records have shown; thus culminating into the failure and total abandonment of well thought-out maritime development policy plans. An example is the UNCTAD 40-40-20 policy which has helped similar maritime nations as Nigeria to develop adequate capacities in carriage of their seaborne trade and fleet size but has failed to achieve the same feet in Nigeria. The study was thus carried out to assess the implementation outcomes of the defunct UNCTAD 40-40-20 policy in Nigeria, in comparison with the outcomes of the current cabotage policy being implemented by the Nigeria maritime Administration and safety Agency.  The historical research design method was used and secondary data were collected and used for the study. The data collected were analyzed using the difference of means model, independent sample t-test and trend analysis. It result showed a decreasing trend in fleet ownership by Nigeria in both UNCTAD 40-40-20 era and cabotage era. The comparative analysis between the indigenous tonnages in the cabotage and UNCTAD 40-40-20 regimes revealed that the mean tonnages of the indigenous ship owners per annum in the cabotage and UNCTAD 40-40-20 regimes are 229477.2145tons and 279286.3636 respectively over the 11 years period covered in the study. There exists a difference in means of -49809.14909 in favour of the indigenous tonnage in the UNCTAD 40-40-20 regime.  These imply similar implementation outcomes in both policies.  It was recommended that improvement should be made in the implementation of the current cabotage regime to save it from similar failure like the UNCTAD 40-40-20 regime.

Md Nasir Uddin

Abstract

This study measure the curing condition on the high Strength concrete durability in Bangladesh. In the industry of  construction, HPC (High Performance Concrete) has important role for improving durability and improved strength over ordinary concrete. Appropriate concrete compaction is essential for ensuring durability and strength of concrete. Entrapped air expels can placed concrete freshly and set the combined particles collectively that can increase the concrete density. Alike, concrete cover should maintain properly from environmental effects that can protect reinforcement such as deterioration and affords thermal insulation. concrete Durability refers to the ability of concrete to oppose abrasion, chemical attack and weathering action whereas maintaining its preferred civil engineering properties. This study observed that concrete made by clean water and under normal curing condition showed low permeability and Concrete mode by clean water and used within 2 hours showed moderate permeability. This study also showed than Concrete mode with polluted water gave high permeability. The present study will assist civil engineers and supervisors to know the impact of curing condition on the performance concrete durability.

A Review on the Potentiality of Derivative Market and Economic Stability of Bangladesh Author: Md. Edrich Molla

A Review on the Potentiality of Derivative Market and Economic Stability of Bangladesh

Author:

Md. Edrich Molla

Abstract

This study uncovers the different prospects of derivative market in Bangladesh. Economic stability can be achieved through derivative market in Bangladesh. Due to instable economic conditions and restricted environment, corporate sector has reflected insignificant contribution in equity or bond markets in Bangladesh. Rapid infrastructure development, political stability, effective governance, experience and awareness of market participants are the key factors that may lead to build a strong derivative market in Bangladesh. Hence, literature is reviewed and analyzed due to unavailability of appropriate data for this study. Findings of the study have suggested that derivatives are an effective risk mitigating tool on one hand whereas on the other side, highly speculative activities in derivative market may be harmful for the financial markets and economic growth. In Bangladesh perspective, all the players of financial market will have to adopt adequate risk mitigating strategies to avoid any adverse market scenario. Speculative activities must be highly restricted due to economic instability as Bangladesh is not in a position to absorb any financial shocks or crisis. The main regulatory authority of this particular market will be Bangladesh Bank (BB) and Bangladesh Security and Exchange Commission (BSEC) though this kind of market is not introduced yet in Bangladesh. The regulators will keenly observe market and take necessary actions to prevent any adverse conditions.

Abstract

A study was conducted to investigate the effects of feeding citric acid and acetic acid on live weight gain, feed consumption, FCR, meat yield traits of commercial broilers. A total of 108 day old broiler chicks (Cobb 500) fed diets T0, T1, T2 and T3 having three replications in each.T0 (Basal diet with no supplemental acid), T1 (Basal diet with 0.75% citric acid), T2 (Basal diet with 0.75% acetic acid) and T3 (Basal diet with 0.75% citric acid and 0.75% acetic acid). The birds were reared in cage management system. Body weight gains, feed conversion ratio (FCR), mortality and meat yield traits were recorded and analyzed in CRD by using the SPSS software. Feed intake (g/bird) was almost similar (P>0.05) among the dietary groups. Body weight gain (gm) and FCR were significantly (P<0.05) different among the dietary groups. The highest body weight gain (gm) was (P<0.05) in T1 (1512.37gm), followed by T3 (1496.30gm) and T2 (1470.40gm) and T0 (1325.47gm) respectively. The lowest FCR was found in T1 (1.40) and the highest FCR in T0 (1.52), the intermediate in T2 (1.43) and T3 (1.41) respectively. It was found that there was significant (P<0.05) difference among the dietary groups in case of carcass weight (gm).live weight (gm),thigh weight (gm), breast weight(gm) but there was almost similar(P>0.05) among the dietary groups for heart weight (gm), spleen weight(gm), gizzard weight(gm), head weight(gm) and intestine weight (gm). Carcass weight in T1 (905gm) and live weight T1 (1496.67gm) were significantly (P<0.05) different compared to control T0 (668gm) and T0 (1160.67gm) respectively. No mortality was found among the dietary groups during experimental period. It was concluded from this experiment that supplementation of 0.75% citric acid in the diet had positive effect on the performance of broiler production.

Abstract

We examined the determinants of Foreign Direct Investment Inflows in SADC member countries. The study employed Pooled OLS as the main estimation method and using data from the period 1995–2016. Our results revealed that infrastructure, trade openness and market size are positive and significant determinants of FDI inflows in SADC Countries. Results support the previous theory like Hecksehel-Ohlin (1933) and eclectic paradigm or OLI framework developed by Dunning (1980). However, human capital has positive insignificant and inflation has negative significant with FDI inflows for the SADC member countries. Therefore, SADC countries should promote trade agreements to facilitate exportation which has linked with industrial sectors, In addition, SADC countries should reform investment policy to attract more foreign inflow into SADC countries in the long run. The availability and reliability of the good infrastructure of attract many investors to invest in the region.

Abstract

Effect of fenugreek, antibiotics, ginger and ignatia on body weight, body weight gain, feed consumption and FCR of Japanese quails was evaluated in this study. Fifty Japanese quails were randomly allotted to five treatments identified as T0, T1, T2, T3 and T4. Birds on T0 served as control and T1, T2, T3 and T4 groups were treated with fenugreek, antibiotics, ginger and ignatia respectively. Fenugreek and ginger was in powder form while others were in liquid form. Average body weight in different treatments were different from the control for body weight in 1% level of significance. Feed consumption, body weight gain and feed conversion ratio in different treatments were different from the control for body weight in 5% level of significance. The birds fed the liquid form of ignatia showed better body weight, body weight gain, feed consumption and feed conversion  ratio and are comparatively significant than those feed with fenugreek, antibiotics and ginger with those of control group.

Key words: Fenugreek, Ignatia Amara, better body weight gain, FCR.

Abstract

Maternal health is the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Maternal health comprises the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Health problems during pregnancy may have serious consequences, not only for the woman but also for her child, her family, and her community. This paper is about the health care taking behavior during pregnancy (Antenatal Care) which is an important indicator of the utilization of Maternal Health Care Services (MHC) in Bangladesh. In our study we have focused on the factors that affect the antenatal care. In our study to define the antenatal care we paid our interest of a woman’s antenatal visit, getting care from doctor, nurse, family welfare visitor (FWV), medical assistant/sub-assistant community medical officer (MA/SACMO). For this study, we used secondary data extracted from BDHS-2011, which is a national representative survey of the 15-49 years age groups women. The analysis has been carried out over 7,315 women who have fulfilled the study eligibility criteria. To see the effect of socio-economic and demographic factors on antenatal care (ANC), One way ANOVA was carried out for bivariate analysis and Generalized linear models (GLM) with log link function was carried  out for multivariate analysis. In bivariate analysis it has been found that Type of place of residence, Media Exposure Educational level of Respondent, Husband/partner’s education level, Region, Religion, Wealth index, Belong to NGO and Age of mother at birth has significant effect on antenatal care (ANC).

Key words: Antenatal care (ANC), Socio-economic factors, Demographic factors, One way ANOVA,              Multiple comparison, Generalized linear model.

Abstract

Tant industry is the biggest handicraft industry in our country. At present Tant are declining day by day. The aim of the study to identified the existing problems in the Tant industry, evaluate the socio-economic condition of the workers associated with the Tant industries including Tant households. For this study, data are collected with SRSWOR. Our research project based on the prospective pilot study of survey on Present condition of Tant. Original sampling method is multistage cluster sampling. Firstly, we used in appropriate measure of mean with SD (standard deviation), median with IQR (inter quartile range) and percentage for discrete and continuous data. For modeling at first checked the normal P-P plot to the deviation of income index. The linear regression model was performed to analyze the factors affecting the deviation of income index. We observed that educational level, No of family members, No of Tant at beginning, No of worker, Initial investment, Source of loan, Yearly expenditure, perception on Tant are declining day by day, Designing cloth, Additional job and Involving with Tant  since boyhood are significant (P<0.001) to the deviation of income index whereas Marital status, Family status, Price of cloth produced in a week, Investment at present, Colored string themselves, Cloth usually produced are insignificant (P<0.001) effect to the deviation of income index. By Enter method, we do not get the appropriate model, so we get the appropriate model we use to perform another method namely “Forward method”. According to this method in 12th step it consists twelve variable which is Yearly expenditure, No of family members, Perception on Tant are declining day by day, Initial investment, Source of loan, Marital status, Family status, No of  Tant at beginning, Involving with Tant since boyhood, Education level, Additional job, Designing cloth. We observed that Yearly expenditure, No of family members, perception on Tant are declining day by day, Initial investment, Source of loan, No of Tant at present, Involving with Tant since boyhood, Education level, Additional job, Designing cloth are significant (P< 0.001) to the deviation of income index whereas Marital status, Family status are insignificant effect to the deviation income index.

Abstract

Time series data is very important in the case of financial development of any economy. But it is very difficult to deal with time series data. This study is consists of time series modeling and forecasting of some economic variables of Bangladesh. For this study we have considered CPI as selected economic variables of Bangladesh. The variable was collected from the “Monthly Economic Trends” published by the Bangladesh Bank. For modeling purpose we have used Box-Jenkins Methodology which is very popularly known in the sector of time series modeling. On the study at first we have checked the stationarity. For checking stationarity we have used both graphical method and Dickey Fuller test. Then to find the appropriate model for CPI we have used the ACF, PACF curves. After finding the appropriate models we have performed the diagnostic checking for each of the fitted model, which was good. Then by using the best fitted model we have find some forecasted values for each of the variables.

Key words: Stationarity, Box-Jenkins Methodology, Dickey Fuller test, ACF, PACF, ARIMA model.

Abstract

This study empirically examined the extent to which training and development creates business success among small businesses in Port Harcourt. 60 small formal and informal businesses were randomly selected in order to achieve full representation. Our findings showed that small business success can be related to factors such as training and development. The result of our partial correlation also showed that technology significantly moderates the relationship between training/development and business success. The study therefore recommends conscious effort by potential enterprises to train and re-train themselves before venturing into any form of business because having good knowledge on the business is also a sign of future success.

Abstract

This study investigated the extent to which entrepreneurial orientation can bring about the growth of SMEs in Bayelsa State. Innovativeness, risk-taking and proactiveness were used as dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation. One hundred and fifty copies of questionnaire were distributed to three local governments in Bayelsa State which are Yenagoa, Kolokuma/Opukuma and Brass LGAs. Our findings show that entrepreneurship orientation has significant effect on SME growth in Bayelsa State. The study further recommended a mental shift from indigenes, a new orientation that would make them depend less on political cakes and encourage their entrepreneurial mindset.
