Vergílio Ferreira and Malraux: Literature, Existentialism and Cinema

Author (s)

Abstract

Vergílio Ferreira, after a short approach to Neo-Realism, began to be interested in a french writer’s ideas who were a turning point to the portuguese writer. Malraux, a huge reference in Existentialism, had conceived the problem-novel, a text centred in a deep focus concerning Man, Life and the understanding of the Human Condition. With this dialogue between Vergílio Ferreira and Malraux, Existentialism enters Portugal and begins a major theoretical dispute between Neo-Realism and Existentialism. Vergílio Ferreira abandons the neo-realism guidelines and embraces Malraux’s problem-novel.

Vergílio Ferreira’s novels and the influence of cinema

Author (s)

Luis Cardoso

Abstract

Vergilio Ferreira, one of the most important writers of the last century in Portugal, reveals a very interesting relationship with Cinema. In his novels, we may ask if his connection with the Neo-Realism movement or with the Existencialists really influenced the writing techniques. In fact, Neo-Realism was a movement that influenced the writer’s production above all because it had an epocal (historical, aesthetic, literary, and ideological) justification. Could the writer have found in the cinema structural marks with which he impregnated not only his narrative technique but also his ideological vectors? We can clearly state that the author has an interesting dialogue with cinema techniques and often they reveal themselves in his writings.

Portuguese language and literature in Rennaissance: the influence of Erasmus Luis Cardoso

Portuguese language and literature in Rennaissance: the influence of Erasmus

Author (s)

Abstract

Rennaissance in Portugal is characterized by a very close connection with European humanists and the new ideas about religion and daily practices. In this debate, Portuguese humanists reflected upon the thoughts of major authors like Erasmus. So, language and literature became not only a return to the classics, but also a domain for discussion regarding Christianity and the approaches that came from abroad. However, Portugal received these ideas until the Inquisition arrived. After that, humanists became more carefull and avoided the ideas of Erasmus. The case of the Portuguese humanist Pedro Sanches shows us all this: the classic influence, the sympathy for Erasmus and the slow departure to other themes, less dangerous and more focused on language and literature.

Abstract

The Portuguese Rennaissance is truly connected with the ancient classics in language and literature. Many humanists in Portugal began a large movement that wanted to understand the ancient Greek and Latin writers and to bring to the Rennaissance their toughts and words. Portugal opened the doors to European humanists and the new ideas entered the Portuguese culture. One of the humanists that came to Portugal was Pedro Sanches, who worked in the royal palace and is an example of a true humanist in his life and work. His texts and deeds reveal a profound knowledge of the ancient classics, enlighted by the Rennaissance way of thinking, leaving behind the Middle Ages and building a new man for a new world.

Abstract

The massification of the phenomenon of refugees around the world, with 68.5 million people in this condition, being 16.2 million in 2017, demonstrates that the persecution for reasons of race, social group, gender, armed conflicts and the deterioration of human rights that this freedom, equality, dignity, protection of the family and others, are being deprived of a large portion of the world population which, in addition to these factors there are health issues such as depression, post-traumatic disorders, psychotic outbreaks and others. In Brazil, it is observed the same phenomenon. The objective of this work was to present the information requests and recognition of requests for refuge in Brazil during the years 2017 and 2018. The method adopted was the bibliographic research and exploratory. The results indicate an increase of 58% of requests in 2018, on account of the problems faced by Venezuela, which saw its economy wither away with the reduction in the price of oil in the years 2008 to 2015, along with this the political problems and the rentier capital. The affected regions in Brazil are the states of Roraima and Amazonas, on account of the motto with this country, but it is quite challenging the inclusion of this population in such a way that have their rights recognized, because of the 80 thousand applications in 2018, being 77% from Venezuela, only 1% was accepted. This work serves as support for public policies that must seek alternatives to comply with the legislation in such a way that guarantees the fundamental rights to this population, allowing the freedom, equality, dignity, housing, education and right to life.  The need for guarantee of human rights, makes this study can be used by organizations so that they can integrate these people culturally and professionally.

Abstract

The study investigated the effects of microcredit on the empowerment of women in the Northern region of Bangladesh. The leading NGOs namely ASA, BRAC, GRAMEEN BANK, PROSHIKA, SKS and TMSS were targeted for data collection in the three selected districts viz., Gaibandha, Rangpur and Dinajpur in the Northern region of Bangladesh. A total of 247 women (Microcredit borrowers) were selected randomly from the selected districts as the sample of the study. The findings of the study showed that microcredit reduces economic problems of the women and helps to enhance economic empowerment. And also after taking loan or involving with microcredit their family income, expenditure and savings increased significantly. Positive and significant empowerment effects were found for the indicators: intra-HH decision, mobility, and own & child healthcare. It is seen that after taking loan or involving with microcredit decision-making power have changed for the women in all the dimensions used in this study and more importantly the women view such changes rather positively. If interest rates are kept low, payments are collected in a reasonable amount of time, and support in terms of education and advice are granted to borrowers, microcredit can continue to positively impact and empower women in Bangladesh and abroad. It is hoped that the findings of this study would prove to be useful for Government departments, NGO’s, Agencies and Researchers who wish to do further research in the areas mentioned above and may be helpful to the policy makers and planners in formulating plans for national development.

Abstract

This paper examines the CO2 gas emissions and would find the way to save energy use as a result of adopting ride-sharing system named Pathao and avoiding traffic jam in Dhaka city, the capital of Bangladesh. Most of the people like to stay in an urban area because of the availability of extensive facilities and having proper access of travelling. This analysis recognizes the impacts of ride-sharing Pathao on travelling distance, fleet fuel consumption etc. The result indicates that current ride-sharing system reduces CO2 emission and helps to save energy usage through individual use ride-sharing Pathao in Dhaka city of Bangladesh. Advanced vehicle technologies are changing faster, and policy instruments regulating their design should evolve accordingly to remain updated. Bangladesh has recently upgraded the emission test procedure for the advance technology Motorcycle.

Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to examine the factors influencing the work-life balance of female teachers. The study population was composed of female teacher of educational institutions in Barishal division. The respondents were identified through databases from Barishal Education Board, and Ministry of Education, Bangladesh.  A convenience sampling was used to recruit participants. We developed a five-point Likert-based questionnaire (ranging from 1, strongly disagree, to 5, strongly agree). For data collection, the 630 questionnaires distributed, 370 completed questionnaires were returned, yielding a response rate of 58.73%. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS 23.0 and AMOS 23.0. The study employing structural equation modelling (SEM) as the primary statistical technique to analyzed the relationship between dependent and independent variable.  Result showed that the regression coefficient for the path from co-worker support (CS) to work-life balance (WLB) is positive (β1 = 0.681) which indicates that CS contributes to WLB of female teachers.  Similarly, the path from work overload (WO) to work-life balance (WLB) is also significant (β2 = 0.425) which indicates that when WO decreases, work life conflict of female teachers also decreases. Likewise, the path from job engagement (JE) to work-life balance (WLB) is positive (β3 = 0.361) which indicates that JE contributes to WLB. This study is more significant especially in the context of Bangladesh because more and more women are entering into the teaching profession as a result pattern of socio-economic status has changed. In Bangladesh, female teachers can examine their WLB issues using the factors of this study. Finally, different professionals may facilitate awareness about WLB issues confronted by women to make a favorable social attitude towards them.

Abstract

This study based on analysis of liquidity, solvency and profitability between state owned commercial banks (SCBs) and private commercial banks (PCBs). To obtain the empirical results secondary data is used from the annual reports of the banks. A financial statement analysis technique especially ratio analysis is applied. The analysis is shown by different tables and graphs and interpretations are made. Under this study liquidity ratios, profitability ratios and profitability ratios are drawn. After the analysis of liquidity SCBs are higher than PCBs. Under quick ratio PCBs is higher than SCBs. Cash flows from operations ratio had a fluctuating mode in all the banks from 2013-2017 but in 2017 PCBs are better than SCBs. Under solvency ratio PCBs in better position than SCBs. Under profitability ratio the gross profit margin of PCBs is higher than SCBs, in case of net profit margin it’s fluctuating year to year and banks to banks. In case of earnings per share SCBs is far better than the PCBs. It is observed that the overall performance of commercial banks is comparatively better than state owned commercial banks. The main limitation of this study is small sample size that is only two state owned commercial banks and two private commercial banks are taken as sample. And the ratio analysis is conducted based on only 5 years’ data. This study emphasis only quantitative variables but only quantitative variables are not adequate to build an overall measurement of financial presentation. To know the liquidity, solvency, profitability of the banks, future studies may be conducted in the same contest by comparing activities of foreign commercial banks, specialized banks and banks that have started their journey currently.

Abstract

Foreign policy indicates the policy of a sovereign state in its interaction with other sovereign state. India is the neighbor country of Bangladesh & Bangladesh is surrounded by India from three sides. So Bangladesh cannot avoid India. From after the liberation war of Bangladesh Indo-Bangladesh relation become develop day by day. Bilateral trade is the result of good foreign policy of Bangladesh with India. In this research paper I discuss about the trade policy of Indo-Bangladesh. For data collection I use some methods & materials, I have collected data from Bangladesh Bank, Export-Import statistics & had been searched websites, Google Scholar, Research Gate. I selected my objective of research -economic policy of Bangladesh with India, find the problems of trade policy & giving a solution by foreign policy. Abstract

The paper used the Panel Vector Autoregression(VAR) and Generalized method of moments (GMM) to view the impact of structural Change in export on economic growth in West Africa. Due to many challenges African export is the lowest compare to other regions in the world. The similarity of the export of many countries in West Africa is responsible for the trend it exhibits. The results of our analysis have shown that the shocks in Export levels have a direct impact on the contemporaneous GDP growth, while the current GDP growth change affects Export only in the future also there is a short run relationship between the GDP, the Export and the Import. The structural change occurs in the Export and the Import is responsible for the change in the GDP growth holding other things constant.
