Visual problem in school children is a globally important public health issue. An emerging important cause of visual impairment is uncorrected refractive errors, which if not detected and corrected in time, can harm a child’s physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development. A school-based comparative cross-sectional study was conducted from January to December, 2019 to see the pattern and prevalence of visual problems in a representative sample of children attending classes 1 to 5 of selected primary schools under the School Health Program (SHP) and non-SHP schools of Dhaka and Chittagong. 277 school children, aged 5-13 years, and their guardians were interviewed for approximately 30-40 minutes each with a pretested semi-structured questionnaire and checklist. Visual problems were categorized as diminished visual acuity and presence of other ocular morbidities. It was found that diminished vision was more common in non-SHP students. Chi Square was done to see the association between the variables, and they were found to be not significant (p > 0.05). The proportion of diminished vision was found higher among respondents with age group below 10 years (Χ2 = 0.16, p = 0.901), more propensity towards males (Χ2 = 0.751, p = 0.386), Islam religion (Χ2 = 0.966, p = 0.326), nuclear family (Χ2 = 0.495, p = 0.482), most of which was not significant. This study revealed that ocular morbidity was weakly associated with malnourished non-SHP students (Χ2 = 4.556, p =0.033). Lack of understanding and awareness of the consequences and the severity of the ocular morbidities seemed to be the main reason behind the delay in seeking treatment. The study findings may be utilized for further planning and evaluation of the existing school health services, for further improvement and implementation of SHP in all schools, and for conducting an appropriate intervention programs to reduce this preventable problem.
