Abstract

This research aims to empirically investigate the environmental performance of Chinese multinationals using various proxies of internationalization. This research among the first to empirically test the impact of multiple proxies of internationalization in a single manuscript. This research has also employed the largest panel data-set of 15362 firm-year observations to test the association empirically. The findings of the research reveal that the widely used proxy of internationalization (Intensity_1, which is total exports to total revenue) does not find significant support. On the other hand, Intensity_2 (foreign assets to total assets), Breadth_1, and Breadth_2 (measured as the number of foreign subsidiaries) find significant support. These findings are robust when we employed the GMM regression model.

Abstract

In today’s era everybody is trying to be conscious about health. Although, due to workload and busy schedule, one gives attention to the health when any major symptoms occur. But Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a disease which doesn’t shows symptoms it is hard to predict, detect and prevent such a disease and this can lead to permanently health damage, but some machine learning algorithms can come handy in this aspect for their efficient prediction and analysis. By using data of CKD, patients with 25 attributes and 400 records we are going to use various machine learning techniques like Random Forest, Support Vector Machine (SVM), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Decision Tree etc. The purposes of our work is to virtuously predicting Chronic Kidney disease and have a comparative analysis among some of the popular machine learning based approaches based on some performance metrics. In our work, it is found that the Random Forest algorithm outperforming other machine learning based approaches we used in the experiment.

Abstract

The primary education sector is one of the most prosperous sectors in Bangladesh and most of the teachers in this field are women. This study looked specifically at the state of the working life balance of women in the field of teaching and its impact on their perceived performance. Data have been collected among the 130 women educators currently working in various governments and at the kinder school in Bangladesh. A structured questionnaire was used to collect samples from participants. Phase data is summarized using frequency distribution, bivariate analysis performed on chi-square test and multiple liner retrieval is used to identify potential variations associated with perceived performance. The average age was 40-50 y (about 50%) followed by 38.5% it was 30-40 years. 31.5% had more than 2 dependencies. Of them, 57.17% were satisfied with the actual work, 24.87% were neutral and 10% disagreed with their performance. The results of the various organizations showed that age (p-value = 0.002), dependency number (p-value = 0.002), marital status (p-value = 0.006), institutional types (p-value = 0.004) were significantly different depending on their performance. However, the variance was not found in terms of working age. Research has shown that most professionals are satisfied with their performance, however, one in ten thinks they are not performing satisfactorily. Evidence shows that with the reduction of workload per hour, work structures from the organization can speed up the performance of professionals.

Abstract

Using the annual data from 1983 to 2016, the study attempted to explore the role of globalization and financial development on life expectancy in South Asian countries, at the presence of economic growth and pollution. The study employed the panel quantile regression (median) technique that could provide reliable results in the presence of heteroskedasticity and cross-section dependence in residuals, while pooled OLS, fixed effect and random effect models were not. Estimated results confirm that the model is correctly specified, and there is no asymmetry in quantiles. This study has found a significant positive impact for economic growth, globalization, and financial development, and a significant negative impact for environmental pollution on life expectancy in the study countries. So, policymakers have to promote globalization and financial development to improve the population’s health status, besides controlling environmental pollution.

Impacts of Inflation and Exchange Rate on Foreign Direct Investment in Bangladesh

Author (s)

Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate the impacts inflation and exchange rate on foreign direct investment (FDI) in Bangladesh. To meet the purpose of the study, time series data on dependent and independent variables are collected from various secondary sources covering the period 1980 to 2017. For estimation purpose the study employs different econometric techniques such as Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test, Johansen Co-integration Test, and Vector Error Correction Model (VECM). Apart from these, various diagnostic tests have been applied to evaluate the goodness-of-fit of the model. Results of the study reveal that there exists a long-run relationship between dependent and independent variables. Inflation rate is found to have a significant negative impact on FDI in the long-run but it is insignificant in the short-run. The results also show that exchange rate has a significant positive relationship with FDI both in the long-run and short-run. That is, depreciation of Bangladeshi taka against US dollar induces FDI flows in Bangladesh. Therefore, in order to increase the flow of FDI in Bangladesh, it is essential to take necessary steps to curb high inflation and to prevent the devaluation of oreign currencies against Bangladeshi taka.

Abstract

Abortion is currently a widely discussed topic. Not only in urban but also in rural areas women often have abortions. Abortion has a profound effect not only on a women’s body but also on her mind. A woman is forced to have an abortion due to compulsions. In Bangladesh, Abortion is prohibited in both public and religious spheres. Which can only be done to save the mother’s life. But even then, women are secretly having abortions in various unsafe ways. Moreover, in the social system of patriarchal Bangladesh, women are always subordinate to men. She has to suffer physical, mental and social pain. But even then, she is killing her tangled treasure with her own hands. Because under the social structure, women are just silent spectators. To look at the social-cultural issues of abortion, researchers talk to people in this research area and try to find out the reasons behind it by listening to their experiences. As the research area is located in a rural area, researchers try to see the socio-cultural context of abortion and find a wide influence of women’s subordination, power structure and patriarchal mentality. Although abortion has a profound effect on a woman’s body. She is trapped in a structure and decides to have an abortion.

Abstract

As the arena of the NBFIs is widening day by day in Bangladesh, it has attracted many investors of the country for which the profitability analysis of these NBFIs is getting popularity. This paper intends to analyze the firm-specific profitability indicators of the NBFIs in Bangladesh. To conduct this study, panel data of the nineteen NBFIs have been collected for the last 10 years (from 2007 to 2017). The main objectives of this paper to identify the fundamental determinants and to assess their contribution to the NBFIs’ profitability. Three measures of profitability- ROA, ROE and NIM, have been considered as the dependent variables in this paper. The fixed effect model was used in Model I- ROA and Model II- ROE. But the appropriate model for the Model III- NIM is undecided as the panel data for this model did not meet the asymptotic assumptions. To address this problem, Panel Corrected Standard Error (PCSE) Regression Method has been used in this study. The paper has been concluded by saying that ROE and NIM of the NBFIs are not influenced by their deposits and size which indicates that the ROE and NIM of the NBFIs are not sensitive to the sources from the NBFIs collect their funds. Non bank financial Institution should focus on the generation of capital from market using financial instruments with more diversified portfolios. Returns in these institutions can be backed by internally generated capital fund. However, sustainable growth in non bank institution needs to raise a minimum portion of deposit from the market with deliberate earnings from more systematic and dynamic asset class available in the market. Utilization of assets and earning s of mortgage loan and other financial assets should get more attention in Bangladeshi non bank financial institutions.

Abstract

This paper investigates the effect of monetary variables on the performance of stock market of Bangladesh using yearly data over the period of year 2008 to 2019. The objective of the study is to consider the effectiveness and consequences of different monetary variables on stock market of Bangladesh. As a dependent variable DSEX index has been used as a proxy variable for stock market performance and three independent variables repo rate, inflation rate, money market rate has been used as proxy of monetary variables. An ordinary least square method shows that 1% increase in money market rate, repo rate, and inflation rate the index value is decreased by 3.30%,1.20% and increased by 1.90% respectively. So this is suggested that investor should consider the above variables to make strategic decisions about portfolio and investment management.

Abstract

This paper intends to indicate the bank-specific and macroeconomic determinants of bank profitability. The study was conducted using panel data set from 18 conventional private commercial banks listed in Dhaka Stock Exchange over a period of 2010 to 2019. Return on Asset (ROA) was used as dependent variable as a proxy for profitability; nine bank-specific variables and three macroeconomic variables were used as independent variables. The study was conducted using panel data regression model and Hausman test was conducted to choose between fixed effect and random effects model. Empirical results show that Non-performing loan ratio, Equity multiplier, cost to income ratio, Net interest margin, Non-interest income to total asset ratio among the bank-specific variables and Real rate of interest, Economic growth among the macroeconomic variables have significant impact on profitability. An interesting finding is that banks profitability over this period has significant negative relationship with economic growth.

Abstract

This study investigates the relationships of total trade and total value between the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) in Bangladesh. To get the results, various unit root tests, the Granger causality test, and the Johansen cointegration test are employed. Daily data from January 2015 to May 2017 is used to check the relationship. The empirical results of unit root tests (Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test, Phillips-Perron (PP) test, Kwiatkowski, Phillips, Schmidt, and Shin (KPSS) Test, and Elliott–Rothenberg–Stock (ERS) test) evidenced that total trade and the total value of DSE and CSE are stationary at their first differences. The Granger causality test found that total trade and the total value of DSE cause total trade and the total value of CSE and also total trade and the total value of CSE causes total trade and the total value of DSE meaning that there is bidirectional causality exists between the selected variables. The Johansen cointegration test showed that there is no cointegrating relationship among the variables indicating that there is no long-run relationship among total trade and total value between DSE and CSE.

Comparative Analysis of Economic Performance of SAARC Countries Based on the Estimated Cobb-Douglas Production Function Deeti Saha

Comparative Analysis of Economic Performance of SAARC Countries Based on the Estimated Cobb-Douglas Production Function

Author (s)

Deeti Saha

Abstract

This study intends to compare the economic performance and examine the relationship between real GDP (dependence variable) and total labor force and gross fixed capital formation (independent variables) in the case of SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation) countries based on the Cobb Douglas production function. To conduct the study, time series data were used from 1980-2017 in four countries and 1990-2017 in four other countries. The ordinary least square method (OLS) was used to measure the linear regression model. The Breusch-Pagan-Godfrey and Breusch-Godfrey Serial Correlation LM Test tests were used to test for heteroscedasticity and autocorrelation. The adjusted R-Squared shows that 96.81%, 99.98%, 99.74%, 99.85%, 99.36%, 97.84%, 99.65%, and 99.89% of the total variation in the dependent variable (GDP) in the case of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Nepal, and Pakistan respectively are explained by the fitted regression equation. That means the economies of SAARC countries are well defined by the Cobb-Douglas production function. The economies of Afghanistan, India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal show increasing returns to scale. The economies of Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, and Pakistan show decreasing returns to scale. It is also noteworthy that the economies of the four countries show increasing returns to scale; these countries also have better marginal productivity of labor and marginal productivity of capital performance. Per capita GDP, GDP growth rate, labor and capital, the marginal productivity of labor and marginal productivity of capital, the elasticity of labor and capital have been highlighted to compare the economic performance of SAARC countries. The quality of the labor force is essential for sustainable capital investment.

Abstract

The East African Community (EAC) and European Union (EU), have an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) initiated in October 2014.  The EAC agreed to negotiate on the EPA in order to participate beneficially in the global economy, decrease poverty and support their economic development. By fast-tracking the already existing economic integration, the EAC wanted to eliminate barriers to trade, form bigger markets and stimulate productivity and investment expansions.  This paper predicts the trade in commodities between the EAC and EU for 10 years using import and export data from 2009-2016. Regression analysis is used to forecast the level of imports and exports. The study uses a linear model Ft=a+bt+ ε to forecast the level of imports and exports. Two linear models one for imports (Ft=2,791,351.50+28,196t) and another for exports (Ft=4,177,572.071 +62,500.3t) were formulated. The study concludes that there is no significant difference caused by BREXIT on EAC-EU commodity trade in 10 years.

The Effect of Non-performing Loans on Performance and Profitability: A Comparative Analysis from Banking Sector of Bangladesh Sanjida Afrin

The Effect of Non-performing Loans on Performance and Profitability: A Comparative Analysis from Banking Sector of Bangladesh

Author (s)

Sanjida Afrin

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to assess the intensity of ‘Non-performing Loan’ and its adverse impact on the performance and profitability of the banking sector of Bangladesh. A comparative scenario of state-owned commercial banks and private commercial banks have also been presented in this study. The foregoing discussion of NPL from the perspective of Bangladesh reveals that the amount of defaulted loans have reached an alarming position which degrades the banking industry and makes the economy stagnant. The comparative analysis showed that SOCBs have a higher amount of total NPL, gross NPL ratio and net NPL ratio than that of PCBs. Share in industry total assets, share in deposit and also change in the contribution of industry assets of SOCBs are very lower in comparison to PCBs. Capital adequacy, capital to risk-weighted assets, ROA, ROE and maintained provision of SOCBs are very poor while PCBs have satisfactory performance. Active implementation of policies, proper and adequate surveillance of SOCBs, qualified and neutral board members and non-executives, improved lending process, enforcement of punishable measures and most importantly strong ethical attitude are some of the possible and effective recommendations that should be implemented to eradicate the root of NPL from this emerging economy.

Abstract

This report mainly focuses on identifying the managerial skills of fund managers, asset management companies in managing closed-end mutual funds of Bangladesh those are floated during 2013 to 2019 and which allowed to review the management fee system in the mutual fund industry. The analysis found that six fund managers have positive alphas or can produce an abnormal return, which is significant, six other fund managers can be called neither significant nor worst and seven other fund managers have negative alphas or cannot earn excess return due to the lack of managerial skills which are not significant statistically. The highest value in R-square refers that the movement of these mutual funds can be explained not only by the market index but also by the other three factors. It can be concluded that some fund managers have managerial skills, and some don’t have skills, but the current management fee structure system of Bangladesh is counterproductive. This report finds that the seven fund managers with negative alpha, get the same or higher management fees just like the fund managers of positive alpha.

Abstract

In the current study entitling “An Empirical Scrutiny of Environmental Accounting Reporting (EAR) and Vision 2021: A way of Environmental Protection”, I critically examine the practices of environmental accounting in listed companies in Bangladesh and how it can be linked with the near goal of Bangladesh “Vision 2021” which is the election manifesto of current government. Vision 2021 has eight goals and our environmental issues are given priority in that case. As EAR is voluntary reporting, stakeholder theory and legitimacy theory can be related. Content analysis is used as methodology and taking 52 listed companies of Dhaka Stock Exchange randomly from 10 main industries and world bank report in order to know prevailing environmental situation in Bangladesh. The study has found there is a severe environmental degradation over years and listed companies are not aware of EAR in Bangladesh. Lastly, the paper suggests some recommendation to focus on EAR in order to achieve Vision 2021.

Review of EEG feature selection by neural networks Ildar Rakhmatulin

Review of EEG feature selection by neural networks

Author (s)

Ildar Rakhmatulin

Abstract

The basis of the work of electroencephalography (EEG) is the registration of electrical impulses from the brain using a special sensor or electrode. This method is used to treat and diagnose various diseases. In the past few years, due to the development of neural network technologies, the interest of researchers in EEG has noticeably increased. Neural networks for training the model require obtaining data with minimal noise distortion. In the processing of EEG signals to eliminate noise (artifacts), signal filtering and various methods for extracting signs are used. The presented manuscript provides a detailed analysis of modern methods for extracting the signs of an EEG signal used in studies of the last decade. The information presented in this paper will allow researchers to understand how to more carefully process the data of EEG signals before using neural networks to classify the signal. Due to the absence of any standards in the method of extracting EEG signs, the most important moment of this manuscript is a detailed description of the necessary steps for recognizing artifacts, which will allow researchers to maximize the potential of neural networks in the tasks of classifying EEG signal.

Abstract

The primary objective of this study is to investigate the effects of the similarity in the skill resources of the merging firms on the post-acquisition performance of the acquiring firms. The study investigates the post-acquisition performance of 313 samples of merger and acquisition transactions completed from 2003 to 2015 by American firms operating in pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. The study find out that the similarity between the merging firms in the degree of emphasis they give to the marketing activities can lead to a positive post-acquisition performance for the acquiring firms. On the contrary, the similarity between the merging firms in the degree of emphasis given to R&D activities is found to negatively affect the post-acquisition performance of the acquiring firms. In addition, the study find out that the acquirers size positively moderates the relationship between the similarity in the degree of emphasis given to marketing activities by the merging firms and the post-acquisition performance of the acquiring firms. It indicates that larger acquirers have extra resources which they can invest to facilitate the integration and the learning process for the marketing teams of the merging firms to share ideas and knowledge which may positively influence the post-acquisition performance of the acquiring firms.

Abstract

This paper examines the impact of intellectual capital reporting in the annual reports of Pharmaceuticals company listed at Dhaka Stock Exchange on their performance. This paper uses sample of 31 pharmaceuticals company for the period 2016-2017. To measure the extent of IC disclosure on the annual report a disclosure index (ICDSI) is developed. Information related to firm performance is obtained from annual report. Correlation and regression analysis have been used for data analysis. This paper found positive relation of IC disclosure with two performance measure (ROE and ROA) but negative relation with EPS. However, relationship is not significant. The impact of control variables on firm performance is also mixed and narrow. The reason for limited association among the variables can be lower amount of disclosure, unrelated concept of firm performance and ICDSI. The mean disclosure is only 23%. Overall findings of the paper suggest company disclose human capital information mostly. Further study may include longitudinal study with more sample size and control variable. This study will help academics who want to work in IC literature. Manager of Pharmaceutical will get to know which IC information reporting will give them organizational benefit. Regulator can get useful insights from this paper to formulate and implement IC related guideline. This paper is one the very first paper in Bangladesh to investigate IC disclosures impact on firm performance through developing ICDSI index.

Environmental and Individual Determinants of Entrepreneurial Growth

Author (s)

Md Arifuzzaman

Abstract

Entrepreneurial growth is predicted to be related to micro variables (motivations) and macro variables (infrastructure elements) but in a differential way. Infrastructure variables are tested as moderators in the motivation-growth relationship. Motivations are further categorized into internal pull and external push factors. A rich sample of 405 recently- minted entrepreneurs in a privatizing economy (Bangladesh) was surveyed. Results essentially confirmed the predictions, with motivations playing a larger role than anticipated. Implications were discussed for policymakers charged with the responsibilities of economic development through entrepreneurship.

Abstract

Liberation war of Bangladesh is indeed a unique episode of her history. This history is the extreme level of the movements of 24years including language movement of ’48 & ’52, election of ’54, establishing Bengali as one the state languages of Pakistan in ’56, education movement of ’62, six point Bengali nationalist movement of ’66, mass uprising of ’69, gaining majority of Awami League in general election of ’70. Around 3million people were killed and 2lakhs women were abused between that 9months. Nevertheless, practice of the spirit of liberation war has been temporized and true history has been procrastinated to record. Through this study, the researcher tried to find out how the young generation think about liberation war and how much they are intended to practice the spirit of liberation war in daily life. This study has been accomplished in qualitative method. A specific number of participants have been sampled to collect data. These data have been analyzed meticulously and according to those, some initiatives have been recommended to deal with it.

Determinants of Profitability of Commercial Banks in Bangladesh

Author (s)

Rokibul Hasan Sakib and Dewan Azmal Hossain

Abstract

This report focuses on the determinants of profitability of 30 DSE listed Commercial banks of Bangladesh from 2010 to 2017. The analysis part of this paper includes multiple regressions to determine impact of significant variables on profitability. The findings of this paper suggests that the net interest margin ratio (NIM), Asset size (LOGA), the ratio of operating expense (OPEX) are significant against the dependent variable called Return on Equity (ROE). Interest income is main source of income for banks. The finding suggests that if asset size increases, return on equity (ROE) will decrease and if operating expense ratio increases, return on equity decreases.  Additional analysis is done in return on assets (ROA) and return on operating assets (ROOA) to justify whether the results meet with the main analysis.  The findings of this study suggest that commercial banks should be more careful while giving loans with diversified portfolio maintenance.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the current scenario of the disclosure of sustainability in the annual reports and websites of the listed banks in Bangladesh. In this study, the financial year 2019 has been selected (most current at the time of conducting this study) to examine the changes in various aspects of sustainability disclosure over the period of time. It is found that banks disclosed more information in annual reports compared to that of corporate websites.  Based on average sentences disclosed, Human Resource Development disclosure is the highest, and Energy consumption and savings related disclosure is the lowest compare to other items disclosed. Based on average sentences disclosed, third-generation banks disclosed more information compared to first and second-generation banks, and conventional banks with Islamic windows disclosed more information compared to sharia-based Islamic banks and interest-based commercial banks. This study also develops a theoretical framework to explain the results.

Abstract

This study has been initiated as an effort to understand working capital management practices of firms in the Pharmaceuticals and Chemicals Industry in Bangladesh. It has focused on relationship between the working capital variables and firm performance using panel data consisting of a sample of 31 firms from the Pharmaceuticals and Chemicals industry for a period of 19 years from 2000 to 2018. Various types of statistical tools such as mean, median, quartile analysis, graphs and charts and regression analysis have been used for the analyses. Fixed Effect model regression has been used based on the output of the Hausman Test. For testing the relationship between a firm’s profitability and its norms of working capital management, regression has been run considering Basic Earning Power as a dependent variable and current ratio, the cash conversion cycle, quick ratio, inventory conversion period, payable deferral period, days sales outstanding as explanatory variables. The cash cycle has a negative impact on the basic earning power which signifies that, as the cycle grows bigger the core profitability of the business reduces. The same applies for holding inventory for a longer period as it reduces core profitability. As the time to collect payment for sales increases, the core profitability of a business decreases. As companies age, they enjoy learning effects and become more efficient so positive relationship with core profitability exists. The major findings hence indicate that working capital is found to have significant impact on core profitability of firms in Pharmaceuticals and Chemicals industry.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine how community radios’ broadcasting services fostered socio-economic development in Mbarara District among communities. The objectives of the study were; 1) To  examine the extent to which community radios` broadcasting services have contributed to the socio-economic development of communities in Mbarara District, Uganda, 2) To assess the effect of community radios` health broadcasting services on radio listenership among communities in Mbarara District, Uganda, 3) To analyze the relationship between community radios` listenership and socio-economic development of communities in Mbarara District, Uganda. The research design for this study was a cross sectional survey employing both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. Quantitative data was collected using questionnaires. Qualitative data was collected using both interview and FGD schedules as research instruments. The study surveyed 250 respondents and quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics; frequency distributions, cross tabulations, correlation analysis and regressions. Path analysis was lastly conducted examining the various conducted variables as a way of assessing the casual models established in the different objectives. Qualitative data analysis was done using theoretical propositions. Structural Equation Modeling was conducted to ascertain the functional relationships where a hypothesized model upon which the fitting of a structural Equation model was based. The result shows educational broadcasting (β =0 .716, p = 0.000. statistically significant direct effect on socio-economic development. Educational Broadcasting having a positive effect on level of participation in radio programs aired (β = 0.346, p = 0.000) and frequency of radio listening (β = 0.174, p = 0.007). Furthermore, goodness of-fit results show a Root mean squared error of approximation (RMSEA) = 0.201. This result shows a poor fit for the full model since RMSEA is greater than 0.1. Comparative Fit Index (CFI) = 0.689 is poor fit in predicting socio-economic development. In order to get a model that fits better, Structural equation modelling was again conducted. Result shows factors statistically significant indirect effect on socio-economic development of communities include; educational having a positive effect on level of participation in radio programs aired (β = 0.297, p = 0.001) and frequency of radio listening (β = 0.187, p = 0.003).This study developed a Sustainable community conscientious Operational Radio Enterprise (SCORE) Model that can be used in Community based Radios’ Broadcasting Services to enhance socio-economic development among listeners.

Abstract

In this paper, we review the damage of argon welding to human health and its prevention. Argon weld gas-type argon welding is a colorless, odorless chemical element of noble gases and chemically inert of the most abundant gases on the surface of the globe and is a gas that insulates the weld zone from the surrounding atmosphere. Lengthy exposure to welding fume is feasibly producing lung harm and numerous categories of cancer, comprising lung, larynx, and urinary tract. Gases like argon and carbon dioxide transfer oxygen in the air and can cause asphyxia, predominantly as welding in restricted or surrounded areas.

Abstract

The main purpose of the study was to identify factors that affect service taker’s satisfaction with various banks in the northern region of Bangladesh. Both primary and secondary sources were explored for data collection. Necessary data were collected from 200 respondents. A structured questionnaire with 5 point Likert scale had been used to collect data. Data had been analyzed by using SPSS software. Different statistical tools were used which were compatible with our research such as reliability analysis, Frequency Distribution, Cross-tabulation, Multiple Regression Analysis, Hypothesis Testing, and Factor Analysis. The findings of the study revealed the most important factors that affect the service taker’s satisfaction. The study suggested that there was a strong effect of independent variables on the dependent variable. Unstandardized coefficients indicated how much the dependent variable (Service taker’s satisfaction) varies with the independent variable (15 factors) when all other independent variables are held constant. Thus alternative hypothesis was accepted and the null hypothesis was rejected. The study was based on the relatively small sample size (200) from the northern region of Bangladesh, which may not reflect the whole scenario of Bangladesh. The results of the study will be helpful to the bank authority and other stakeholders to determine customer demand and also help to formulate better policies to satisfy existing customers and attract the new customer.

Abstract

This paper has been conducted to examine the connection between working capital management measured and profitability performance is measured. The study is conducted based on secondary data from annual reports of respective textile firms listed in DSE and DSE monthly reviews. From 2000 to 2018. The objective of the study is to find out the working capital devoted to the firms registered in the Dhaka stock exchange and find the connection of their performance and working capital capitalized in registered textile firms in DSE. To address this panel data, besides ratio and quartile study, Hausman test, variance inflation test, and fixed effect regression was done for testing all the hypotheses and the study result shows the inverse association with age and payment deferred period but a positive association with fixed asset turnover, cash conversion cycle, days sales outstanding, inventory conversion period, sponsor shareholdings and total assets. It also suggests to produce an effective policy must be produced for each company for each component of working capital. Besides, well-organized management and financing of working capital can upsurge the operating profit of a textile firm. Shorter cash conversion cycle, days sales outstanding, and the inventory conversion period can increase firms’ profit. These are some practical examples of working capital management.

Impact of Agricultural Productivity on Economic Growth and Poverty Alleviation in ECOWAS Countries: An Empirical Analysis

Abstract

Many African countries are still being faced with basic welfare issues such as hunger and extreme poverty, sparking debates among researchers and policy makers on whether the continent can endogenously leverage its agricultural potentials to address these challenges. To contribute to these debates, this study employs a panel data spanning 26 year (1990-2015) and including 13 ECOWAS countries to analyze the impact of production factors on agricultural productivity and examine the question of whether and how agriculture can serve as a tool for growth and poverty alleviation in the region. By linearizing the Cobb-Douglas production function and using fixed effects (FE) with country dummies, we find positive and significant relationship between lands cultivated, physical and financial capitals, as opposed to labor employed on agricultural productivity. Next, by using 2SLS/IV and GMM/IV methods, we show that agricultural productivity can be a pro-growth and counter-poverty tool. Furthermore we find that non-agricultural productivity interacts significantly with agricultural productivity and that agricultural productivity gap (APG) decreases both growth and poverty index. Following these results, we chart the transmission mechanisms for policy makers that will allow them to understand the linkages and pathways through which agricultural productivity affects the entire economy.

Key words: Agricultural productivity, agricultural productivity gap (APG), production factors, economic growth, poverty reduction, ECOWAS, SSA, Africa.
