Abstract

Bangladesh has been taken into consideration as a climate vulnerable country and the impacts of climate change increase threats of adverse condition in agricultural production. This study is primarily based on assessing farmer’s adaptive capacities to adaptation techniques, its determinants and problems of taking adaptations. It’s an empirical study that is conducted on the basis of 100 mango producers lived in the Chapai Nawabganj district. Adaptive Capacity Index (ACI) is utilized to calculate the adaptive capacity of farmers and using Multiple Regression Model (MRM) the determinants of adaptive capacities are identified based on OLS method. Another comprehensive index called Problem Confrontation Index (PCI) is also applied to rank the problems confronted by farmers to take adaptation techniques. The findings of this study reveal that farmer’s average adaptive capacity is moderate in degree in the study area which is 0.64 and 73% farmers are moderate level adapters. In addition, regression analysis reveals that the variables education, training, family size and weekly mango orchard visit have significant impact on the adaptive capacities of mango producers lived in the study area. It is also found that “lack of agricultural loan” ranked top and appears to be the most intense trouble of the mango producers to take adaptation techniques in the region studied. Finally, this study suggests that government should formulate proper policy to enhance adaptive capacities of farmers in Bangladesh.

Abstract

The knowledge on the nutritional status of pregnant women in Bangladesh is not enough. About 60% of South Asian women have underweight children due to a lack of healthy food and nutrition during their childhood. Pregnant women are the main victims of unhealthy eating habits, which are responsible for malnutrition. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess knowledge and attitudes about nutrition among pregnant women in the rural areas of Dhaka, Bangladesh. A brief and descriptive study was conducted in four randomly selected villages in Nawabganj district in Dhaka, Bangladesh with 384 randomly selected pregnant women. Data were collected from respondents using a semi-structured questionnaire by face-to-face interviews, after taking participants’ verbal consent. The SPSS 20 model is used for data entry and analysis. The findings of the study indicate that more than half of the respondent’s level of knowledge about nutrition was excellent or good but only 43.0% respondents had excellent or good attitude towards nutrition. The level of knowledge was strongly associated with the age of respondents, the type of family and the number of pregnancies and the level of attitude was strongly associated with the age of the respondent and the number of pregnancies. Based on the results of the study, it can be recommended that healthy nutrition education should be strengthened to empower rural mothers to understand the importance of nutritious food during pregnancy. Long-term study on a large scale with the similar population can help to generalize the findings.

Abstract

The study aims to explore the existence of the N-shaped Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) in Bangladesh. The policy implications for the inverted U-shaped and the N-shaped EKC are different, therefore, it is important to identify the real shape of the EKC for a country for adopting an appropriate policy for mitigating environmental pollution. Although many studies in the context of Bangladesh have explored the inverted U-shaped EKC, none of the study explores the N-shaped EKC. Against this backdrop, the present study has attempted to explore the N-shaped EKC in Bangladesh by using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) Bounds test approach. The study has found that the actual shape of the EKC in Bangladesh is N-shaped for both the short- and long-run. This implies that although higher economic growth mitigates the environmental pollution, but after a certain level of income, the pollution will rise again with the higher level of income per capita. Therefore, policymakers need to reconsider the existing growth promoting policy and adopt a new policy by considering the possibility of this N-shaped EKC.

Abstract

The current study is analyzing various factors that determine the profitability of a bank. More importantly, this article has tried to evaluate the relationship between bank-specific and macroeconomic variables with banks profitability. To quantify the profitability of the banking industry of Bangladesh, Return on Equity (ROE) and Return on Assets (ROA) are used as dominated variables. Independent variables are IRS, CAR, NIITA, CR, LTD, DG, SIZE, GDP, INF and NETWORK. Relevant data comes from 30 Bangladeshi commercial banks. Panel data regression result describes Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR), Total Assets (SIZE) and Inflation (INF) has a positive association with bank profitability in Bangladesh. Credit Risk (CR) has the highest influences on the dependent variables and Non-interest Income to Total Assets (NIITA) has the lowest. The study provides guidelines to the goal setters of financial institutions. It provides a direction for the governing body to formulate and improve relevant policies and the outcomes suggest that banks should manage credit risk and utilize deposits in more productive segments of the economy of the country to ensure sustainable benefits.

Abstract

This paper proposes to make a contribution to the existing literature through examining the impacts of electricity consumption and financial development on urbanization in Bangladesh during 1974-2014 by employing modern econometric techniques. We conduct dynamic nexus among financial development, electricity consumption, and urbanization by utilizing ARDL technique. The ARDL technique is employed to find dynamics among variables and to check the long run connection. This analysis performed the unit root problem through the ADF test where variables are I(0). Long-term associations are found by checking the bound test. Both electricity consumption and financial development are significant to affect urbanization. The long-run elasticities are higher impacts on urbanization than the short-run elasticities. Also, various diagnostic tests are made such as serial correlation, heteroscedasticity, normality. To evaluate the parameter stability, we execute the CUSUM test and CUSUM square. The results confirmed that there is no structural break in the economy. The paper provides some policy recommendations based on the results.

Abstract

Bangladesh is one of the climate change endangered countries in the world, having numerous disasters around the year due to its geographical location, low lying landscape, and a high amount of carbon emission. To overcome the adverse climate change impact, Bangladesh bank has directed all the banks sincerely and thoughtfully to adopt green banking practices for the betterment of the country. In particular, Green banking aims to choose environment-friendly banking practices for all banks and sustainable financing for its clients. The ground of the paper is to encourage green banking practice and explore its potentials in commercial banks where Islami Bank Bangladesh Ltd. (IBBL) is considered as an instance. The analysis of the paper is based on secondary data sources. In the data collection process, the last five consecutive years’ published data of IBBL’s green banking disclosure were taken into account. The study’s objective is to measure how effectively IBBL is performing its green banking obligation by analyzing and comparing each year’s value to the subsequent year. For the data analysis, the author has used MS Excel and a simple growth rate model. The study found a positive growth rate in direct green investment and CRF utilization of IBBL. However, the growth of the green marketing, awareness program and the bank’s utility consumption appeared with a negative growth rate. The study also resulted in IBBL’s inconsistent growth in waste management and renewable energy management. The overall performance of the green banking practice of IBBL for 2014 to 2018 was good. Therefore, it is expected that the banks will focus more on green banking issues to attain socially responsible banking to reduce environmental degradation.

Abstract

Environmental degradation affects the health status of many people all over the world. Bangladesh is one of the most polluted countries, and every year 96,000 children died before reaching their fifth birthday because of environmental pollution. The present study has attempted to explore the pollution effect on the life expectancy of Bangladesh by analyzing the annual data from 1974 to 2014. The study has relied on the ARDL bounds test for checking the long-run association that can allow the admixture of I(0) and I(1) series (but inapplicable for I(2) series). The study scrutinized the unit root problems by running the widely used Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test. Besides, other essential tests associated with the ARDL, like the normality test, serial correlation test, heteroskedasticity test, model specification test, and parameter stability test were also performed. The study found a significant negative impact of environmental degradation on life expectancy both in the short- and long-run. Therefore, the study suggests the proper implementation of environmental protection laws and regulations.

Abstract

Commercial banks play a crucial role in the context of modern business world. Being financial intermediaries, banks effectively contributes to the economic growth of our country. The relationship between changing interest rates and its impact on bank’s profitability has become a sensitive fact of having paramount importance. A comprehensive study has been conducted by using 5 consecutive years’ data (2014-2018) of all the 30 listed commercial banks of Bangladesh. The secondary data was collected from annual reports of corresponding commercial banks. This study represents the association and effect of interest rate changes on bank’s profitability. It also shows empirical charts, graphs regarding analyzing data and communicating results. This report has been divided into seven chapters for the convenience of preparation. Descriptive analysis, linear regression analysis, multivariate analysis, analysis of variance, correlation analysis, multicollinearity test and durbin-watson test have been carried out to establish and explain the relationship between stated two facts. It is derived from the study that change in Interest rate has significant impact on the profitability of commercial banks. Interest rate spread positively impact the profitability measures of the study (ROE, ROA, and NIM).

Abstract

This report focuses on the determinants of profitability of 30 DSE listed Commercial banks of Bangladesh from 2010 to 2017. The analysis part of this paper includes multiple regressions to determine impact of significant variables on profitability. The findings of this paper suggests that the net interest margin ratio (NIM), Asset size (LOGA), the ratio of operating expense (OPEX) are significant against the dependent variable called Return on Equity (ROE). Interest income is main source of income for banks. The finding suggests that if asset size increases, return on equity (ROE) will decrease and if operating expense ratio increases, return on equity decreases.  Additional analysis is done in return on assets (ROA) and return on operating assets (ROOA) to justify whether the results meet with the main analysis.  The findings of this study suggest that commercial banks should be more careful while giving loans with diversified portfolio maintenance.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the current scenario of the disclosure of sustainability in the annual reports and websites of the listed banks in Bangladesh. In this study, the financial year 2019 has been selected (most current at the time of conducting this study) to examine the changes in various aspects of sustainability disclosure over the period of time. It is found that banks disclosed more information in annual reports compared to that of corporate websites.  Based on average sentences disclosed, Human Resource Development disclosure is the highest, and Energy consumption and savings related disclosure is the lowest compare to other items disclosed. Based on average sentences disclosed, third-generation banks disclosed more information compared to first and second-generation banks, and conventional banks with Islamic windows disclosed more information compared to sharia-based Islamic banks and interest-based commercial banks. This study also develops a theoretical framework to explain the results.

Abstract

This study has been initiated as an effort to understand working capital management practices of firms in the Pharmaceuticals and Chemicals Industry in Bangladesh. It has focused on relationship between the working capital variables and firm performance using panel data consisting of a sample of 31 firms from the Pharmaceuticals and Chemicals industry for a period of 19 years from 2000 to 2018. Various types of statistical tools such as mean, median, quartile analysis, graphs and charts and regression analysis have been used for the analyses. Fixed Effect model regression has been used based on the output of the Hausman Test. For testing the relationship between a firm’s profitability and its norms of working capital management, regression has been run considering Basic Earning Power as a dependent variable and current ratio, the cash conversion cycle, quick ratio, inventory conversion period, payable deferral period, days sales outstanding as explanatory variables. The cash cycle has a negative impact on the basic earning power which signifies that, as the cycle grows bigger the core profitability of the business reduces. The same applies for holding inventory for a longer period as it reduces core profitability. As the time to collect payment for sales increases, the core profitability of a business decreases. As companies age, they enjoy learning effects and become more efficient so positive relationship with core profitability exists. The major findings hence indicate that working capital is found to have significant impact on core profitability of firms in Pharmaceuticals and Chemicals industry.

Abstract

The main purpose of the study was to identify factors that affect service taker’s satisfaction with various banks in the northern region of Bangladesh. Both primary and secondary sources were explored for data collection. Necessary data were collected from 200 respondents. A structured questionnaire with 5 point Likert scale had been used to collect data. Data had been analyzed by using SPSS software. Different statistical tools were used which were compatible with our research such as reliability analysis, Frequency Distribution, Cross-tabulation, Multiple Regression Analysis, Hypothesis Testing, and Factor Analysis. The findings of the study revealed the most important factors that affect the service taker’s satisfaction. The study suggested that there was a strong effect of independent variables on the dependent variable. Unstandardized coefficients indicated how much the dependent variable (Service taker’s satisfaction) varies with the independent variable (15 factors) when all other independent variables are held constant. Thus alternative hypothesis was accepted and the null hypothesis was rejected. The study was based on the relatively small sample size (200) from the northern region of Bangladesh, which may not reflect the whole scenario of Bangladesh. The results of the study will be helpful to the bank authority and other stakeholders to determine customer demand and also help to formulate better policies to satisfy existing customers and attract the new customer.

The objective of the study is to find out the working capital devoted to the firms registered in the Dhaka stock exchange and find the connection of their performance and working capital capitalized in registered textile firms in DSE. To address this panel data, besides ratio and quartile study, Hausman test, variance inflation test, and fixed effect regression was done for testing all the hypotheses and the study result shows the inverse association with age and payment deferred period but a positive association with fixed asset turnover, cash conversion cycle, days sales outstanding, inventory conversion period, sponsor shareholdings and total assets. It also suggests to produce an effective policy must be produced for each company for each component of working capital. Besides, well-organized management and financing of working capital can upsurge the operating profit of a textile firm.
