Potential Health Risk of Indoor air Pollution on Human Health in Residential Houses of Chittagong city, Bangladesh

Abstract
Indoor air pollution has become one of the biggest threats to human in recent years. Study by EPA on human exposure to pollutants indicates that indoor levels of pollutants could be 2 to 5 times higher than outdoor pollutant levels. The objective of this study is to find out indoor air pollution sources and pollutants in the residential houses of Chittagong city and their impacts on the inhabitant’s health. Surveys were conducted on 30 different residential houses which include apartment houses, tin shade houses and slum houses. The possible health hazards associated with the pollutants were identified using books, journals, and literatures. The study suggests exposure to indoor air pollutants such as asbestos, VOCs, carbon monoxide, NOx, SOx, Particulate matter, mold, virus, bacteria and many more. The health hazards due to these indoor air pollutants may range from less severe headache to severe disease cancer. Alternatives to reduce the exposure to these harmful indoor pollutant sources could be using environmental friendly products for housing, lessening use of chemicals, using improved kitchen stoves, introducing hygiene, planting indoor plants and ensuring proper ventilation. Hence, illustrating the condition of indoor air quality of the residential houses in Chittagong city, the paper would serve understanding of the issue and would help to reduce exposure and health risk.
