Abstract

Attendance in classrooms of students in contemporary higher education at national universities in Bangladesh plays an important role. It is a common belief that more classed students score better on the exam than do less or non-class students. According to the attendance policy of the BBA Professional Department of Habibullah Bahar University College (HBUC), students should attend at least 80% of their total classes to prevent students from appearing in the final exams. Thus, this paper examines the relationship between final examination performance and the class attendance percentage participation between two different semesters of BBA Professional Department in Statistics-I and Statistics-II students. The survey was conducted from December 2016 to March 2020 in the BBA Professional Department of Habibullah Bahar University College to complete the research work. A total of 108 students were selected as the sample for this study. Research data regarding class attendance and academic results from published results were collected from college attendance records of the BBA professional department. Data was analyzed in terms of frequency, percentage and independent t-test using SPSS-20 version of software. This study shows that there is a positive correlation between classroom attendance percentage and final exam grade. Since classroom attendance percentage influenced the final outcome of the students, therefore, according to the ‘80% Rule’, students were divided into two groups. Judging by the independent t-test, the results were analyzed and found that significant differences exist between the two groups; As a result, students with more than 80% attendance achieved higher marks as opposed to less than 80% attendance.

Abstract

A man-made social system that determines the gender of a human being based on gender behavior, characteristics, and sexuality. The term third gender has a broad meaning. The third gender is basically what we mean by those whose gender identity or gender expression implies something different from the gender they received after puberty. The social life of third gender and his true sexual identity is the story of a life of continuous struggle. The social system of Bangladesh is changing. As well as changing the social status of the third gender in the society. In today’s society, eligibility for third gender has increased. The Hijra community is now becoming a part of our society. In this case, the judgment of the court has made significant contributions. This paper attempts to outline the socio-economic status of the Hijra people in Bangladesh as well as the steps taken by the government for the Hijra community. To make this task a success, a quantitative method was chosen; specifically, a structured interview method has been followed to collect accurate data from primary sources, giving a clear picture of the socioeconomic status of Bangladesh’s Hijra community. One hundred thirty five respondents were collected in Dhaka city through a non-probability sampling method using convenience technique. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS. Due to the shortage of time and money, this study was restricted to the surrounding area of Dhaka City only. Therefore, the first limitation of this study is to collect information only from the emissaries living in Dhaka city. Second, quantitative data was collected only from those under 60 years of age.

Life Imprisonment under International Criminal Law: A Human Rights Approach Hossain Mohammad Younus Sirazi

Life Imprisonment under International Criminal Law: A Human Rights Approach

Author (s)

Hossain Mohammad Younus Sirazi

Abstract

Unsurprisingly, life imprisonment is a maximum penalty under international criminal law, where the position of death penalty throughout the world tends to be mostly abolished owing to the stance of human rights jurisprudence. Likewise, through the lenses of a human rights approach, if life imprisonment is critically looked, it raises serious concern though the imposition of such sentence is not directly prohibited. This is because the inherent spirit of international human rights norms, this paper argues, that reveals the incompatibility of such sentence with human dignity, right not to be subjected to cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment as well as right to rehabilitation and hope for release of the offenders, even the most heinous criminals, and also with the principle of proportionality as well as legal certainty. This paper endeavors to revisit the implications of such a human rights approach in the infliction of life imprisonment by rendering a realistic release mechanism for lifers by international criminal tribunals. This paper also tries to argue that retribution and deterrence in sentencing have been unduly emphasized proffering no clear justifications for inflicting such sentence. Therefore, this paper stresses to be adopted a more focused and cautious human rights approach to life imprisonment under international criminal law because if such approach would be emphatically embraced, it would have also served rehabilitative purpose of sentencing jurisprudence and rendered a dynamic and early release mechanism for lifers.

Key words: Life imprisonment, Sentencing jurisprudence, Human rights approach, International criminal courts and tribunals, A dynamic and early release mechanism.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the comprehensive comparison about the financial performance of conventional and non conventional banks of Bangladesh. The study shows that in spite of a few exceptions in general conventional overall performance was better than the non conventional banks. I have chosen five Islamic banks and five Conventional Banks & analyze different data to find out the effect of CAMEL Factors on Return on Equity. Here I have used different dependent variables to analyze the impact of each variable on Return on Equity. The variables are Capital Adequacy, Asset Quality, Management Quality, Earnings & Liquidity The regression model indicates that Capital adequacy, Asset Quality, have significant negative impact on Return on Equity for conventional bank. This model also indicates Management Quality & Earnings Quality and Liquidity are positively related to Return on Equity and this variable has also significant impact on Return on Equity. I have used this same model for non conventional banks and found that Capital adequacy, Asset Quality and Earnings and Liquidity have negative insignificant impact on Return on Equity & only Management Quality has negative insignificant impact on return on asset. Then In my study I have used descriptive statistics to compare between these two banking system in terms of CAMEL factors. I have found that conventional bank dominates non conventional bank in terms of Capital Adequacy, Asset Quality, Earnings, whereas non conventional bank dominates conventional banks in terms of Management Quality and Liquidity.

Key words: CAMEL, Conventional Banks, Non Conventional Banks, Performance Analysis.

Abstract

Technical Barriers to Trade can form formidable hurdles for Organizations seeking to sell products and provide services to specific countries. These barriers are frequently erected based on government-mandated standards. This paper discusses the use of Online Transaction Standards in South Korea and explores the effect the Standards had on competition and diversity when it came to the availability of service providers for the country’s domestic market.  The paper concludes that a small number of companies benefitted from the unique business ecosystem set up within an effectively closed market and this reliance on this ecosystem may have been a problem for Korean companies when trying to expand overseas.

Abstract

Waste management is at its lowest ebb in most towns and communities in Nigeria. Most parts of the city centres do not benefit from public waste disposal services. The goal of this study was to assess the level of environmental literacy in the management of solid waste in Ibadan, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to investigate the waste management practices, assess the level of awareness, their willingness to participate, concern for waste management, attitudes to waste management and governmental strategies used to educate residents about waste management in Ibadan. A total of three hundred and eighty four questionnaires were administered to randomly selected households. Key informant interviews were conducted with officials at the Oyo State Ministry of Environment and Oyo State Waste management Authority. Statistical package for Social Science (SPSS) was used to analyze the quantitative data. The statistical methods used included descriptive statistics of frequency and percentage. The result on waste management practices amongst residents showed that food waste was the most generated in Ibadan, followed by polythene and paper. With regards to awareness, findings showed that residents were generally aware of what waste is and also aware of waste management practices such as recycling and composting. The findings on attitude to waste management revealed that positive attitude was only exhibited towards the benefits of waste management while negative attitude was displayed toward the practicality of waste management. With regards to governmental strategies, result showed the major governmental strategies as public education through media jingles, community awareness campaigns, and inspection of market places, printouts and town meetings. One of the recommendation was that incentive based recycling programs should be introduced to encourage the practice amongst residents.

Abstract

Alkalinity and hardness often used exchangeable when discussing water quality. These collective properties of water share some resemblances but are distinctly different but both has high mineral content. Generally, the water shows alkalinity due to the presence of weak acid and strong base resulting salt, typically as the form of bicarbonate salt and it can create some serious problems in water body. Hard drinking water, carry excess of Ca and Mg salt, may have moderate health benefits but can pose critical problems in domestic and industrial settings. Thus, it is important to assess the water quality with respect to hardness and alkalinity. The objectives of this study to provide an overview of alkalinity and hardness, an understanding of the importance of alkalinity and hardness from ecological perspectives and management, a summary of methods for measuring each, and the current state regulations for each in public waters of Chittagong city. The results obtained for pH, conductivity and alkaline ionic compositions from different surface and ground water samples of Chittagong city presented here with critical observations. For investigations, some related anions and metals examined by UV-visible spectrophotometer and FAAS utilizing Na-tetraborate after the pre-concentration on a column packed with Amberlite XAD-16 resin. The results show that some parameters such as salinity, total alkalinity and hardness; Na+, Ca2+, Cl, and HCO3 loaded in both surface and ground water is quite high than slandered value; other parameters like NO3, NO2, SO42-, PO43-, K+, NH4+, and Mg2+ levels are in permissible range. Overall, it may state that the water of studied areas is very hard, saline as well as alkaline and suggesting that water should not uses for household, irrigation, and industrial purposes without proper treatment.

Abstract

Novel composite materials were manufactured using saw dust, sodium silicate solution and corn starch. Corn starch works as a reinforcement to the sodium silicate solution. The floatation method was utilized to obtain the wet mixture for manufacturing composites by compaction. The quantity of saw dust and sodium silicate solution were fixed and the starch powder content in the binder solution was the working variable. Starch powder content in the binder solution were 1.4 g, 1.6 g, 1.8 g and 2.0 g.   The gelatinization of starch is investigated to confirm the gelatinized solid starch content in the binder solution. Compression tests were carried out on the composites in the Universal Testing Machine at a cross head speed of 1 mm/min. The density, compressive strength and modulus were found to increase with increasing gelatinized solid starch content. On the other hand specific compressive strength decreased with increasing density of the composite while specific compressive modulus showed an opposite trend. Comparing with the literature, the developed composites showed superior properties and were found to have practical applications.

Abstract

In her quest to put the nations’ foreign exchange policy in line with global practice, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in the mid of 2016 made a paradigm shift by unveiling flexible foreign exchange policy driven purely by market forces. Consequently, forecasting models reported during pegging policy era may be deeming obsolete. This paper proposed a prediction model for future daily selling exchange rate between Nigerian Naira and United States Dollar in the interbank market amidst volatility using daily rates made available by the Central Bank of Nigeria over the periods July, 2016 to October, 2017. We applied the Box-Jenkins methodology to the Naira – US Dollar exchange rate series in order to build an adequate and well specified prediction model. On the first phase of the study, we checked the stationarity of the series and based on Augmented Dickey-Fuller test and correlogram, the series is stationary at level. The findings revealed that the future daily exchange rate of Naira per US Dollar depends on its past rates and associated innovations. This is evident from the fact that  turned out parsimonious model for forecasting the parity between the two currencies on the basis of Bayesian Information Criterion. The said model yielded error of forecast (MAPE) within ten percent.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of employee training in the banking sector of Bangladesh, where effectiveness is defined as the improvement of knowledge, skill, ability (KSA) and job performance. There were four predictors (training design, development and implementation of training, validity of training and facilitation of transfer) and two hypotheses were developed to conduct the study. To test the developed hypotheses data were collected from 120 bank employees through close ended questionnaire and convenience sampling were used to select the respondent. Multiple regression analyses were used as a statistical tool to test the impact of the factors on improvement of KSA and job performance. The findings reveal that training design and facilitation of transfer have significant influence on improvement of KSA and job performance. This study will help the managers and practitioner to understand why evaluation of training is so much important. Simultaneously, it will encourage managers to provide support, opportunity and other facilitations that are conducive to transfer training.

Abstract

Remittance plays a very important role in the national economy. Remittance inflow in Bangladesh is one of the prime sources of foreign currency reserve. A certain amount of foreign currency reserve is indeed a vital need for the country because of its high degree of dependency on import. Inflow of remittance depends on the amount of manpower migration. Remittance earnings have increased more than five times during the past decade and it is currently the single largest foreign exchange earner for Bangladesh. Inward remittances to Bangladesh during the first six months of FY2011-12 stood at about USD 6.1 billion which is 9.3 per cent higher than the comparable period of the previous fiscal and Reaching an all-time high of 1491.36 USD Million in july of 2014 and a record low of 856.87 USD Million in September of 2017.  The main purpose of this study is to forecast the next ten years Remittance in Bangladesh. Here, we applied different methods of time series and analyze the yearly Remittance data in Bangladesh over the period 1996-1997 to 2016-2017.  We applied Box-Jenkin’s methodology to identify the actual model based on different model selection criterion. On the study at first we have checked the stationarity. For checking stationarity we have used both graphical method and Dickey Fuller test. Then to find the appropriate model for Remittance we have used the ACF, PACF curves. In this research, we found that ARIMA (1, 1, 0) model is suitable for the forecasting the Remittance in Bangladesh. Comparing between the original series and forecasted series, we found that the Remittance flow is in Bangladesh is projected to increasing.
