Abstract

Large-scale mass poisoning through arsenic contaminated groundwater is a global concern and Bangladesh is among the countries exposed to high concentrations of arsenic in groundwater. As arsenic is a widespread contaminant, several studies have been conducted on it but only a few of these studies were held on micro regions by assessing its role on water quality index. In this study, the source and mobilization of arsenic, its effect on soil and plant, level and consequence of toxicity in human health along with current and potential methods to eliminate arsenic from groundwater in Bangladesh were reviewed based on previous researches. Along with the review, an experimental study was also carried out in an arsenic prone region of Bangladesh named Faridpur Sadar Upazila to delineate the role of arsenic in contamination by generating two synthetic scenarios where water quality was measured by the weighted arithmetic water quality index (WQI) method. From the review it was found that, both geogenic, as well as anthropogenic sources, contribute to arsenic affluence in groundwater in Bangladesh. The most accepted theory states that the Himalayan is the primary geogenic source of arsenic in the Bangladesh. Arsenic arrived in the aquifer transported with sediments which eventually releases into groundwater by several biogeochemical processes. This arsenic-contaminated groundwater is extensively used for drinking purpose and irrigation resulting in accumulation of arsenic in human body, soils and plants.  Moreover, the accumulated arsenic in soil and plants transmits into the human body jeopardizes human health. Though, several arsenic removal technologies are now in practice in Bangladesh, more eco-friendly and convenient methods may be utilized to attenuate the level of toxicity.  The experimental study revealed that, if the arsenic amount was reduced from the present condition, the overall WQI increases considerably. At one location, the index changed from category E to category B while considering a synthetic scenario of no arsenic in water. This indicates that arsenic is the key pollutant of groundwater in the area. This paper expects the kind attention of the local people and policymakers about the severity of arsenic pollution in the region.

Abstract

Social business hubs play an important role in facilitating social innovation and support social entrepreneurs to deliver social benefits to the wider community. This paper aims to firstly identify and evaluate the key success factors of social business hubs in the Middle East with the focus on Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq, secondly, identify what successful social hubs offer, and thirdly, identify the challenges facing social business hubs in the region. In-depth interviews with eight social business hub managers were conducted using a pre-designed questionnaire. The findings were interesting and meaningful and show the impact severity of the COVID-19 pandemic on the infrastructure of the social business hubs. Networking and collaboration seem to be the predominant success factor for social business hubs. Finally, we observe that social business hubs in the region are facing many challenges; the main two are lack of government support and funding issues.

Abstract

In this paper, we attempted to test whether the governance has a positive impact on the structural change in SSA or not.  For the cause, we used the six indexes of the Institutional Quality namely Government Effectiveness, Rule of Law, Control of Corruption, Political Stability and Absence of Violence/Terrorism, Regulatory Quality, Voice of Accountability to see their impact on the structural change in SSA. We use 46 SSA countries from worldwide governance indicator of World Bank from 1996 to 2016 in a Generalized Method of Moment and Generalized Least Square regressions. The results show that only the Government Effectiveness is positively affecting the value added (proxy of structural change) of three sectors (agriculture, industry and service) of the SSA economies.   Some affect positively one sector and negatively another sector, while the rest are insignificant for one sector and negative for other as example. Our results show that more efforts need to be done for the betterment of the institutional quality considering each sector’s particularity.

Abstract

Bangladesh has been taken into consideration as a climate vulnerable country and the impacts of climate change increase threats of adverse condition in agricultural production. This study is primarily based on assessing farmer’s adaptive capacities to adaptation techniques, its determinants and problems of taking adaptations. It’s an empirical study that is conducted on the basis of 100 mango producers lived in the Chapai Nawabganj district. Adaptive Capacity Index (ACI) is utilized to calculate the adaptive capacity of farmers and using Multiple Regression Model (MRM) the determinants of adaptive capacities are identified based on OLS method. Another comprehensive index called Problem Confrontation Index (PCI) is also applied to rank the problems confronted by farmers to take adaptation techniques. The findings of this study reveal that farmer’s average adaptive capacity is moderate in degree in the study area which is 0.64 and 73% farmers are moderate level adapters. In addition, regression analysis reveals that the variables education, training, family size and weekly mango orchard visit have significant impact on the adaptive capacities of mango producers lived in the study area. It is also found that “lack of agricultural loan” ranked top and appears to be the most intense trouble of the mango producers to take adaptation techniques in the region studied. Finally, this study suggests that government should formulate proper policy to enhance adaptive capacities of farmers in Bangladesh.

Abstract

The study’s overall goal is to assess the influence of conflict management on managerial performance at the Ministry of Finance and Planning, and it employs a descriptive research methodology. The study employed a sample size of 44 respondents, which included senior managers, line managers, and support workers. The respondents were selected using a simple random sampling method and purposive sampling. In this study, questionnaires were employed as the primary data gathering tool. The data gathered in the field was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 16.0, which included descriptive statistics like percentages as well as inferential statistics like frequencies percentages analyses. According to the findings of this study, the majority of respondents believe that dialogue influences conflict management and managerial performance. They also believe that involving employees in conflict resolution leads to the achievement of a mutually optimal solution, implying that using an integrating strategy to manage conflicts improves managerial performance. The study concludes that conflict management strategies and managerial performance are linked, and that the most commonly used strategies are integrating, avoiding, and obliging. It is recommended that the Ministry of Finance and Planning highlight and use at least two or one strategy to ensure objectivity.

Abstract

Water treatment is crucial for agricultural production in order to maximize its value. It is suitable for use in agriculture, construction, and advanced technologies, and new technologies, especially in the field of IT. This paper presents an intelligent rule system based on a multi-agent architecture using fuzzy logic. This paper really solves the problem of regulating the supply of cold and hot water in industry. The problem of the lack of a clear mechanism for regulating water for use in the industrial process has led to unsatisfactory results in the production capacity of the financial sector. This can be solved through the development of the accessory function, which is an analysis of the causes of problems in the management of cold and hot water used in the manufacturing industry. The design of the accessory function, which consists of detecting deviations in the amount of liquid that had to pass through the hot and cold water tanks for industrial applications and necessity. Development of a smart rule that will control the amount of liquid in hot and cold water tanks, in trains, these are rules that must strictly follow the control format and consists in creating and developing a model of the water management process to increase production using an intelligent agent. The result is an increased level of performance where the intelligent agent that was used is concerned.

The Effect of Public Debt Composition and Government Expenditure on Economic Growth of Kenyan Government Angela Mucece Kithinji

The Effect of Public Debt Composition and Government Expenditure on Economic Growth of Kenyan Government

Author (s)

Abstract

Many developing countries have high levels of public debt many of which do not have sufficient resources to meet the public debt obligations. The Kenya government has reported high debt levels the debt levels of which do not assume a downward trend but instead continue escalating from one year to another while not downplaying the role of the its huge expenditure. The major concern is whether some developing countries such as the Kenya government should raise more of foreign debt which is cheaper in terms of interest costs while adhering to the conditionality of lending countries or whether the country should borrow domestically despite the higher interest costs. It was thus feasible to establish the influence of the composition of the Kenya public debt and government expenditure on the country’s economic growth. The study employed a causal research design. The period under study ranged from 2002 to 2017. The study used secondary data which was extracted from the National Bureau of Statistics, and National Economic Surveys which were available at the Government of Kenya website. Descriptive statistics was used to test the magnitude of the study variables. Regression analysis was used to establish the effect of public debt composition and government expenditure on economic growth in Kenya. The study established that both public debt composition and government expenditure had significant effect on economic growth of the country when tested individually. However, the findings further revealed that on the combined effect of the two independent variables, only government expenditure was found to influence economic growth unlike domestic public debt. The study therefore recommended that the government of Kenya should take precautions when engaging borrowing domestically and by extension in any form of borrowing.

Abstract

The present research studies the numerical methods for resolving Bernoulli’s divisive statistical stability, because it is difficult to find analytical solutions for the largest number of stochastic divisive calculations. We found a new way for Bernoulli by adding white noise. Price measurement was achieved with a variety of selected models, and we realized through the solutions that the larger the (n) we find, the more we find the direct solution that approaches zero, and the error rate that approaches zero. The difference between a numerical solution and a direct solution has been observed.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to contribute to the literature by investigating the impact of microcredit programs on how individuals perceive microcredit and the facts about it.This study also investigates the efficiency of management policies of microcredit institutions in targeting the ‘real’ poor. Lastly, provide some insights on how to enhance these programs’ effectiveness in alleviating poverty. This study adds to the existing literature, which found that microcredit programs had a positive impact on participants’ income, expenditure, quality, quantity, and education. Furthermore, the findings show a significant relationship between microcredit and an increase in the recipient’s business profits and capital in countries such as Bangladesh. The researchers discovered, however, that providing microcredit was able to increase individuals’ feelings of empowerment and independence. Moreover, the targeting criteria of microcredit institutions are found to be very efficient in being able to reach the extreme poor. Finally, the study referred to common challenges in the microfinance business that, apparently, microfinance institutions in Bangladesh are facing.

Abstract

This study was conducted to analyze the effect of China’s investment on the business environment and Economic growth of Sub-Saharan Africa countries in the perspective of BRI. The study used a neoclassical growth of Solow-type growth model and panel data analysis from the period of 2003 to 2018 on 43 SSA countries for the investment. Two panel regressions were estimated using time and country fixed effects through the fixed effect study result showed that the Chinese investment in the perspective of BRI has positive and statically significant effect on the economic growth and business environment of Sub-Saharan African countries. Which the Chinese investment studied in SSA countries is not a threat and normalized the negative attitude of some western researchers about Sino-Africa. China should have to revise the policy of investment in all countries in the region. Before Chinese FDI flow to the region it should have to study the environment for investment, business, policy and need of the countries. Chinese FDI should have assurance new knowledge, capital and infrastructure in the SSA countries to develop their business policy towards BRI. Besides, there is luck of full data and information of the Chinese FDI to SSA which has a limits research and complete analysis to help policy making with difficult measuring because of all each country has different resources, political systems and histories which has a lack of a uniform and clear model does not all variables might exact influence to the economic growth. Finally, it has an advantage to SSA countries and it will help for the future base of Sino-Africa BRI research and emphasized both relationships.

Abstract

Compared with western developed countries, China’s lawyer industry is still in the primary stage of development. The turnover intention of legal practitioners is more obvious, and the turnover phenomenon is more common. From the perspective of the reasons for leaving, the actual effect of law firms on the career management of legal practitioners plays an important role. At the same time, most legal practitioners are concerned about their career development status. Especially for young legal practitioners, if they cannot get substantial growth in their work, they will sprout obvious turnover intention. It seems that career management and career development have a significant inhibitory effect on turnover intention. However, it has a strong theoretical and practical value to explore the relationship between the three in detail using quantitative research and empirical analysis. On the one hand, this study addressed the gap for the limitation of the current academic research in related fields; it positively promoted the development of China’s lawyer industry. This research will take Jiangsu Province of China as the source of the research samples to analyze the related problems of legal practitioners in Jiangsu law firms. This study explores career management and career development on turnover intention and draws scientific and reliable research conclusions through empirical analysis. Finally, it puts forward relevant suggestions to reduce the turnover intention of legal practitioners in law firms.

Abstract

In order to improve R & D efficiency and reduce R & D cost, pharmaceutical enterprises are willing to split up multiple stages of new drug R & D, and in the form of signing contracts, outsourcing part of pharmaceutical R & D business is carried out to professional organisations. These organisations undertaking R & D outsourcing services are called Contract Research Organization (CRO). Because of the rapid change of market, diversified demand and increasingly fierce competition, CRO is facing key problems such as enterprise development, service level and talent echelon. By adopting a flexible business model and adapting to the market demand quickly, enterprises can keep core competitiveness and realise sustainable development in the fierce market competition. Given this, this study focuses on the business model innovation of contract research organisation. Through literature, the paper analyses the important factors related to business model innovation and then use the research model of the actual enterprise questionnaire to complete the empirical research. Further reference to domestic and foreign literature, the corresponding questionnaire scale is formulated. After the preliminary verification of the reliability and validity of the pre-survey questionnaire, the legal issue of the questionnaire for empirical analysis. Then, the data of 213 effective questionnaires were collected by SAS software and excel.  This study suggests that China’s contract research organisation should attach great importance to the innovation of business model and increase investment in the whole process of knowledge management to increase the internal innovation source power of enterprises. China’s contract research organisation should arrange the technical innovation in the direction of big data artificial intelligence in advance and formulate a complete risk management plan to significantly improve enterprise performance and enhance the core competitiveness of enterprises.

Abstract

The concept of green HRM was appeared in 1990s and globally accepted in 2000s. Like others organization, commercial banks in Bangladesh have also adopted green HRM. In today’s competitive business situation, organizations want to see bottom line result of their initiatives. Though Green HRM sounds an environmental issue, it may also have association with non environmental factors. The core objective of this paper is to investigate that assumption. Employees of commercial banks operating in Bangladesh were the population of the study. For the purpose of the study, author selected a sample size of 100 employees with the technique of convenient random sampling and collected data through a self-administrative questionnaire. The paper deployed both online and field survey to collect primary data. Responses were measured with Likert 5 point scales ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree. To attain the research objectives, author applied nonparametric test including Mann-Whitney U test, Spearman’s rho and Kendall’s tau_b Correlation and descriptive statistics with SPSS 22. Descriptive statistics evinces that commercial banks are practicing green HRM (mean=3.84, SD=. 35) while result of Mann-Whitney U test indicates (U=459.0, p=.000) that public commercial banks and private commercial banks differ in green HRM implementation. Private commercial banks are implementing more green policy in comparison to public commercial banks. Result of Spearman’s rho and Kendall’s tau_b Correlation confirm that green HRM has positive strong association with individual performance including task performance and productive behavior and the relation is significant. Moreover, the study found weak relation of green HRM with contextual performance but the relation is not statistically significant. Finally, the paper recommended that there is a huge room for improvement in implementing green HRM by public commercial banks and more empirical research with robust statistical analysis is the demand of time to get more insight about green HRM in Bangladesh.

Abstract

In order to better analyze the influencing factors of consumers’ purchase intention of smart wearable devices, this paper uses the technology acceptance model as the theoretical basis, and selects the factors that may have a greater impact on the purchase intention of smart wearable devices as the investigation project. By constructing a theoretical analysis model of consumers’ purchase intention of smart wearable devices, interpret the relationship between the key variables of smart wearable devices and the influence of consumers’ purchase intention, verify the credibility of various assumptions, and propose the development path of China’s smart wearable industry based on the research and analysis results. Specifically, the research contents include the following: (1) According to relevant theories and literature analysis, screen out the influencing factors that affect the usefulness and ease of use of smart wearable devices, and under the framework of the technology acceptance model, analyze the explanatory relationship of the influencing factors that affect consumers to purchase smart wearable devices from two aspects: perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness. (2) With the help of investigation and statistical analysis, the correlation between independent variables and dependent variables that affect the purchase intention of smart wearable devices is discussed. (3) Starting from the personal characteristic attributes of consumers such as age, gender, educational background and income level, the differences between the personal characteristic attributes of consumers and the purchase intention of consumers of smart wearable devices are discussed. The path relationship between independent variables and dependent variables shows that the theoretical analysis model of the purchase intention of smart wearable device consumers constructed in this paper can better analyze the internal influence of the factors affecting the purchase intention of smart wearable device consumers, and help smart wearable device manufacturers and intermediate service providers better understand the key factors affecting the purchase intention of smart wearable device consumers, and guide their product development and marketing activities.

Abstract

Due to growth of economy, government policies, available inexpensive smart devices and low cost broadband services in both developed and developing countries the numbers of Internet users are increasing drastically over the last decades. Recently, the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0 have become global trends. Through Internet of Things (IoT) everyone will be connected his/her devices at home, at work stations, on road, at field or anywhere else. In a network topology, various protocols are used for forwarding the packets. Routes of information (packets) are established by appropriate routing protocols. A routing table is managed by the router for successful delivery of packets from the exact predefined nodes i.e. source node to destination node.  The amount of information stored by the router about the network depends on the algorithm it follows. Most of the used popular routing algorithms are RIP, OSPF, IGRP and EIGRP. In this report, we have tried to evaluate the performance of RIP, OSPF, IGRP and EIGRP for the parameters: convergence, throughput, queuing delay and end to end delay utilization through simulation which has been performed using OPNET. We have tried to find out the best protocol suits for the designed Enterprise Local Area Network (ELAN) as well as pros and cons of each protocol.
