Abstract

A key challenge of many Kenyan supermarkets is competition in brands’ visibility and availability which are two key aspects impacting probability of purchase. Marketers thus employ Point of Purchase (POP) advertising and signage and provide POP displays to enhance visibility and achieve communication. This study surveys the aspects impacting acceptance of Point of Purchase (POP) Displays and Fixtures by Supermarkets in Kenya.  The findings of the study will benefit the fast moving consumer goods distribution supply chain, the academia as well as government tax departments. The study is a descriptive survey of 31 supermarkets in Kenya. Data was collected using a questionnaire and an observation was done of the POP Displays and Fixtures used in the supermarkets.  The data collected was analyzed using descriptive techniques. The findings were presented using qualitative approaches. Three main aspects were identified; space constraints, willingness of the supermarket management to carry out the promotions and forms of displays availed.  In addition, the supermarket owners valued good relationships with product owners, joint POP design and support in cash incentives. The study recommends studies to examine the extent these aspects affect acceptance as well as exploration of POP as a form of Sales Promotion, its effectiveness and what extent of their use will generate optimal sales.

Comparative Study of Feeding Probiotic (A-Max®) and Growth Promoter on Growth Performance of Commercial Broiler

Abstract

An experiment was conducted with 120 Cobb-500 Broiler day old chicks to evaluate the effect of feeding probiotic (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) with or without growth promoter (GP). Birds were reared in open sided shed type house. Body weight and feed intake were measured and examined on day 0, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 32. Chicks were randomly divided into four groups having three replications. The number of birds in each replication was 10. Four diets were considered: control; probiotic (PB) @ 1ml/liter; GP @ 100g/50kg and GP plus PB (@ 1ml/liter+ 100g/50kg). The records were kept on body weight, feed intake and mortality while weight gain, feed efficiency (FE) and survivability were calculated. Temperature and humidity were recorded four times daily. At the end of the experiment, one broiler was sacrificed from each replication to determine carcass characteristics. Broiler chicks that received PB and a combination of PB+GP treatments showed significant improvement in performance (p<0.01) over control with respect to body weight gain, feed efficiency, carcass yield and cost effectiveness. Feeding GP alone had comparatively less weight gain, net profit and almost similar feed efficiency compared with PB and GP+PB groups but it’s performance was significantly better than that of control group. This study indicated that the diet containing GP+PB offered slightly increased benefits to the growth performance of broilers, and these benefits were almost equal to the PB. It is revealed that probiotic (A-MAX) supplementation with growth promoter is beneficial for broiler production and no hazard on human health.
