The Location Determinants of FDI in Sudan. Time Series – Empirical Analysis From 1980-2018

Abstract

This paper study the location determinants of FDI inflow in Sudan, the study applied multivariate time series, Vector auto-regression using time-series data of 1980-2018. Variable include; market size, infrastructure, inflation rate, Debt, Dummy of investment incentive, and Terms of Trade openness. The empirical results revealed that there is a short-run causality relationship running from independents variable to FDI as specified in the study. Also, GDP, External debt, investment incentive, and inflation are important location determinants of FDI inflows to Sudan. The Granger Causality shows Uni-directional causality running from GDP, Inflation, TOP, inflation, and Dummy investment incentives to FDI. These results were consistent with the short-run vector autoregression results. Therefore for a country to be declared as attractive by MNC, it means that the above factors have to be significant, since the variable for infrastructure and terms of trade openness are insignificant, investors would choose to neglect Sudan.  The outcome shows that GDP is a very important variable in determining the location choice of FDI. This suggests that authorities need to take into account factors that hamper the growth of the economy given its importance in attracting FDI inflows. Finally, Sudan should implements policies to encourage a fast-growing economy by improving its debt service payment, infrastructure, and its terms of trade openness and international cooperation.

Abstract

Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) hold business potentials that gain  a serious attention from the government. Some factors that affect the efficiency of SMEs include: internal and external factors. The success of SMEs depends on its abilities in managing its internal and external factors through environment factor analysis and the creation and execution of work strategy. Using PLS-SEM analysis, sample used for the study was 80 Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) owners or managers in Surabaya, Indonesia. The findings of this study state that Managerial Capabilities has the most significant impact. Meanwhile, Environmental Dynamism does not have any impact towards Firm Performance, because SMEs are independent in managing the company, in terms of its capitalization, product or service development, and flexibility resulting from its low operating cost of workers, and place of business.

Abstract

In Bangladesh, the number of women on board is very low. The purpose of this study is to analyze and examine whether female director representation has any impact on firm performance and firm’s financial reporting practices where reporting practices involve reporting IFRS-4 requirements practices for insurance contract. A simple linear regression model is conducted to examine the two research questions of this study. This study analyzes secondary data from annual reports of all the listed insurance companies in Bangladesh during the period 2017 from Dhaka Stock Exchange. There are two research questions: (1) whether female directors have any impact on firm performance, (2) whether female directors have any impact on firm’s reporting practices.  For the first research question the regression result indicates that there is little evidence that female directors have a positive relation on firm performance as the estimation lack significance. And for the second research question the regression result shows that there is negative relation between female director representation and firm’s reporting practices but again the estimation lacks significance. For lack of proper recruitment process for female directors and deficiency of awareness about disclosure reporting, this research fails to exhibit significant results.

Abstract

Newly reformed global economy has the widespread of using foreign exchange derivatives as a risk management tool. Recent trends lead Chinese firms into high financial risk, thus inevitable choice for Chinese companies are using derivative for mitigate risks arising from fluctuations. Purpose of this research is to investigate foreign exchange derivatives effect on value for Chinese companies, 36 non-financial company’s data are used as sample and time frame will be 2013-2017. After controlling for several fundamental firm specifications, this study has shown that there is a positive and significant relationship with a simple decision for using foreign currency derivatives and firm value. Furthermore, result shows using foreign exchange derivatives significantly add value of the firms as higher Tobin’s Q ratio. This finding indicates that especially companies with high firm value can further expand their values through actively participating in hedging activities. Results also indicate that foreign exchange derivatives are more likely to raise large corporation’s value. Another finding is that effect of value-enhancing on degree of derivative use of foreign exchange is weaker for profitable firms than for less profitable ones. This means that increasing derivative holdings by more profitable non-financial firms are unlikely to contribute to their performance.

Key words: Chinese Non-financial firms, foreign exchange derivatives,  risk management, firm value.

Abstract

Human capital is the most valuable asset of any organisation; thus, the active role they play cannot be undervalued. Equipping these valued assets through training and development becomes crucial to guarantee job performance and competitiveness. Though extensive research has been conducted in this area, much is still left to be done especially in the case of Cameroon’s banking industry. To this effect, this study is aimed at modelling a framework based on the impact of training and development on employee performance in the case of the National Financial Credit Bank (NFCB) in Cameroon. Three specific objectives were established including: Orientation and onboarding training, soft and technical skills training, and product and service knowledge training on employee performance. A case study design was adopted and supported by the philosophical underpins of positivism epistemology and objectivism ontology. Relevant data was sourced through questionnaire survey distributed to a target population of one hundred (100) employees of the NFC Bank in the centre region of Cameroon. Data was analysed using the Structured Equation Model (SEM) with all specifications observed. The study revealed that there is insignificant statistical evidence to suggest that orientation and onboarding training affects employees’ performance. It was also noted that soft and technical skills training and product and service training all have significant positive statistical impacts on employees’ performance. This study concludes that companies with management policies on soft and technical skills development and product and service knowledge training have higher chances to improve performance.

Abstract

Good leadership is necessary for good governance and good governance complements development. One of the key conditions of development for a country is creating skilled and good citizens. The process of creating skilled and good citizens is a continuous one and is related to education policies and visions structured and implemented by different nations. In the educational institutions, textbooks often work as one of the most important tools and containers of national policies. This study is the analysis of English for Today for Classes XI-XII in Bangladesh from the perspective of leadership and building leadership skills among students. In this process of analysis, the study shows how the students are being viewed and considered as future leaders of a country. At the same time it also shows how different global and national education policies and documents focus and contribute to leadership development among students. Considering the textbook as the major document, this study discovers the leadership contents, categorizes different leadership types as reflected in the textbook and presents a perceptive discussion over the types with a parallel presentation from the textbook contents. As an analysis of an English textbook, the study also shows how Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) assists the practice of leadership building among students.

Abstract

Years after years, Community Based Tourism (CBT) has been used as a response to the negative impacts of the international mass tourism development that is traced back in 1970’s. It ascertains the participation of small rural communities and conservation of nature and local culture. Despite growing studies on the role of Community Based Tourism, a few researches has been conducted on developing community-based tourism in Maheshkhali, an upazila of Cox’s Bazar District in the division of Chittagong, Bangladesh. This paper reviews how CBT development in Maheshkhali can assure economic development of local people, preserve tradition and culture of Rakhains and maintain environmental balance. This study is a descriptive research drawing on empirical data and literatures from different sources. To review the existing literature, desk based research method has been followed. Again, secondary data has been analyzed theoretically. Further, informal interview method was followed to discuss with locals, tourists, and experts of tourism industry. This study finds out that there is a huge scope of developing CBT in Maheshkhali and it is feasible if active participation is ensured of all stakeholders. With the limitations of reliable data and unavailability, this paper tries to fulfill an identified need to study how CBT development can preserve culture and tradition of a community, generate revenue and protect environment in any other island, hills or area of Bangladesh.  This research can help relevant stakeholders to better understand the necessity of developing CBT in Maheshkhali to ensure sustainability.

Abstract

Business Intelligence (BI) is a specific type of Information Systems (IS). Research on BI uses in academia has been somewhat limited so far. Most decisions in a university are made based on large amounts of data from internal and external sources. So, a BI tool is necessary there in operational and strategic decision making, and also to compete well in the global environment. A case study has been done on the large BI tool at Uppsala University (UU), Sweden. The tool has been used for more than fifteen years with around five hundred regular users currently. The system is called GLIS (in Swedish: Generellt Lednings Informations System) for Generalized Management Information System. This study investigates how the adoption of this BI system may influence the decision-making process at Uppsala University, and thus it becomes the main purpose of this study. An inductive approach using a qualitative method was used in this study. The data collection was carried out by interviewing seven experts at Uppsala University and from some documents provided by them. Techniques from the grounded theory approach were applied for analyzing data. Data analysis shows the positive effects of GLIS at Uppsala University with big improvements in decision making. The study draws the conclusion that the BI tool does affect the decision-making process in UU as decision making activities take less time, provide better quality decisions, and are much easier using the tool.

Abstract

Software Quality is a vital element in Software development, therefore Software Engineering researchers and practitioners strive to show the importance of it. It is obvious to find the best tools to ensure Software Quality. One of the tools that prove the Software Quality is Unit Testing; which has shown its power to assess the Quality of Software. Good Unit tests must have to follow some certain attributes. A well- known working plan is ‘A-TRIP’ through which all the inevitable properties of good Unit Tests are checked. The purpose of this paper is to give words to A-TRIP and to show its practical impact on Software Quality Assurance. Documents analysis was used here as the data collection method to develop Research Questions (RQ). Qualitative method was used as the data analysis method in the research process to answer the RQs. The paper figured out the Cost of Tests as well as made arguments about each A-TRIP property and its implications in terms of costs in the software process.
