Abstract

This paper analyses the impact of new market entrants on the pricing patterns of the mobile network operators in the East African Community under complete information. The study verifies whether incumbent mobile network operators within the East African Community engage in limit pricing when faced with threat of entry by analysing the pricing patterns of 21 incumbent mobile network operators for the period 2000-2019 within the Community’s member states. The study examines panel data using geographical distance as a proxy to the threat of entry. The results reveal that the pricing patterns of incumbent mobile network operators are consistent with limit pricing.

Abstract

In order to better analyze the influencing factors of consumers’ purchase intention of smart wearable devices, this paper uses the technology acceptance model as the theoretical basis, and selects the factors that may have a greater impact on the purchase intention of smart wearable devices as the investigation project. By constructing a theoretical analysis model of consumers’ purchase intention of smart wearable devices, interpret the relationship between the key variables of smart wearable devices and the influence of consumers’ purchase intention, verify the credibility of various assumptions, and propose the development path of China’s smart wearable industry based on the research and analysis results. Specifically, the research contents include the following: (1) According to relevant theories and literature analysis, screen out the influencing factors that affect the usefulness and ease of use of smart wearable devices, and under the framework of the technology acceptance model, analyze the explanatory relationship of the influencing factors that affect consumers to purchase smart wearable devices from two aspects: perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness. (2) With the help of investigation and statistical analysis, the correlation between independent variables and dependent variables that affect the purchase intention of smart wearable devices is discussed. (3) Starting from the personal characteristic attributes of consumers such as age, gender, educational background and income level, the differences between the personal characteristic attributes of consumers and the purchase intention of consumers of smart wearable devices are discussed. The path relationship between independent variables and dependent variables shows that the theoretical analysis model of the purchase intention of smart wearable device consumers constructed in this paper can better analyze the internal influence of the factors affecting the purchase intention of smart wearable device consumers, and help smart wearable device manufacturers and intermediate service providers better understand the key factors affecting the purchase intention of smart wearable device consumers, and guide their product development and marketing activities.

Abstract

The study aims to explore the existence of the N-shaped Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) in Bangladesh. The policy implications for the inverted U-shaped and the N-shaped EKC are different, therefore, it is important to identify the real shape of the EKC for a country for adopting an appropriate policy for mitigating environmental pollution. Although many studies in the context of Bangladesh have explored the inverted U-shaped EKC, none of the study explores the N-shaped EKC. Against this backdrop, the present study has attempted to explore the N-shaped EKC in Bangladesh by using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) Bounds test approach. The study has found that the actual shape of the EKC in Bangladesh is N-shaped for both the short- and long-run. This implies that although higher economic growth mitigates the environmental pollution, but after a certain level of income, the pollution will rise again with the higher level of income per capita. Therefore, policymakers need to reconsider the existing growth promoting policy and adopt a new policy by considering the possibility of this N-shaped EKC.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the sources and management strategies of interpersonal conflict arising between college managers and teachers. It attempted to identify frequently observed conflicts and their sources, conflict management strategies, and whether teachers and managers have differences in their views for the sources and management strategies of conflict. To achieve this purpose survey method was employed and both quantitative via (questioner) and qualitative via (interview) in its approach. The study involved 214 survey participants and a key informant selected through simple random and purposively sampling techniques respectively. Mean and independent-samples t-test were employed to analyze the quantitative data using SPSS 23, in which the qualitative data were embedded. Results revealed that interpersonal conflict was frequently existed in teachers’ education colleges, mostly (m=3.3) resulting from lack of resolving conflict as early as possible. As well as majority of teachers were handle conflict by keeping the self away (m=3.14) it. The findings also imply that college managers employ compromising and integrating as strategies of conflict management. However, in most cases the two groups diverge regarding the sources and management strategies of conflict. Hence, it can be concluded that there is a blame game between teachers and deans in the colleges. This study focused only on teachers colleges therefore, it encountered generalizability problem. Since the problem requires a contextual analysis in its nature, future researchers should apply an exploratory sequential design preceded by in-depth interviews and FGDs. The author believes that this research finding is useful to college deans and teachers to handle interpersonal conflict properly and identify to the major resolution strategies.

Abstract

Managerial ties are becoming crucial success drivers for MNCs in developing and emerging economies. The managers of multinational companies establish networking relationships with government officials and other business actors to secure access to resources, information, and infrastructures that enables them to provide a buffer against the high level of business environment uncertainty. In this way, this study develops and tests an interactive perspective that emphasizes the interaction of managerial ties and institutional support (e.g., implementation of policies, industry information, import-export services, and local resources such as land, electricity and human resources) in influencing MNC performance in Ethiopia. The proposed hypothesis was tested using hierarchical regression results, which were then double-checked using a process model, and the results were consistent. Based on a sample of 227 multinational companies in Ethiopia, it is found that both political and business ties have positive and significant influence on firm performance, and political ties have stronger effect on firm performance than business ties. In addition, in both ties, the interaction effect of institutional support on firm performance is negative. As a result, we conclude that both political and business relations promote MNC performance, but that the value of political and business ties is conditional on the strength and weakness of the government’s institutional support.

Abstract

The unprecedented growth in internet applications’ requirement makes adopting smart network architectures such as Software Defined Networking inevitable. Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is a new network architecture that separates the tight coupling between the control plane and the data plane that exists in traditional networks. The purpose of this separation is to enhance the controllability, security, and management of network resources. A controller is the core element of any SDN network, since SDN use as an alternative of traditional networks, different controllers have been developed, such as Beacon, Floodlight, RYU, OpenDay Light, ONOS, NOX, and POX. Due to the diversity of SDN applications and the use of controllers, the choice of the best-fitted controller has become an application-dependent process, therefore, this study evaluates different SDN controllers in trem of their effect on the SDN QoS performance. A comparison between the POX and RYU, which are widely used controllers, was conducted. Mininet and Miniedit was utilized as an emulation tool to compare the performance of POX and RYU controllers. For emulation purpose, Mininet, iperf3, ping, and the tested controllers POX and RYU were ran on the emulation machine that comes with the following specifications; Intel ® Core™ i5-6200 U CPU @ 2.30 GHz × 2 (2 cores) and 4 GB RAM with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS-64-bit operating system. An evaluation for both scenarios, POX and RYU, was conducted to invetiage the performance in term of QoS parameters, namely  Throughput, Round-Trip Time, and Jitter using TCP, UDP, and ICMP traffic. The obtained results show that RYU controller performed better compared to POX controller, whereas, the RYU controller recorded 1.24% to 5.35% higher average throughput. In addition, RYU controller obtained 0.5 to 1 ms less delay and around 0.02 ms less jitter values than its counterpart POX controller.

Abstract

If smallholder farmers market their produce individually, they may incur significant losses from their buyers, agricultural inputs suppliers, and general service providers. However, farmers’ cooperatives can solve this problem by bringing institutional change, and they are leading solutions compared to other businesses. However, the existing cooperatives still did not fill members’ satisfaction according to members’ expectation and Ethiopian cooperatives are not exceptional. The prior research identified different evidence for the dissatisfaction of cooperative members. Among the reasons, member perception on agency problems is one of them; even though the researchers identified such issues, the cooperatives did not treated according to their unique nature rather similarly with investor owned firms (IOFs). Therefore the purpose of this study is to reconcile these gaps; hence it explored members’ perception on agency problem and its impact on cooperative members’ satisfaction in Ethiopian agricultural cooperatives. The results confirm that members’ satisfaction on cooperative governance has significant relationship with members’ perception on agency problems in Ethiopia. This study also provides evidence that members’ participation on cooperative governance moderate the relationship between perceived agency problems and cooperative members’ satisfaction on their cooperative governance in Ethiopia. Agency theory was underpin to understand the concepts; this study used the explanatory approach of research and used a cross sectional design for data collection and analysis. For the purpose of this study, the sample cooperative unions and primary cooperatives were chosen purposively however the sample 201 individual members chosen randomly and it consisted of 4 cooperative unions and 67 primary cooperatives found in Ethiopia. Hierarchal multiple regressions used to analyze the quantitative data to confirm or reject the hypothesis.

The Utilization of Autoregressive Forecasting Models in Strategic Management

Author (s)

Abstract

This study explores the utilization of autoregressive forecasting models in strategic management. Business forecasting denotes one of the recent developments in the business environment. The approach complements strategic management to foster the optimal performance of businesses. Business strategists use forecasting models to develop foresight on the future performance of their respective firms; however, there is limited literature on the effectiveness of these models. For this reason, this exploratory inquiry delved into generating autoregressive models and further examining their predictive effectiveness. The methods entailed the collection of secondary data (Tesla Motors Inc. revenue data) and subjecting it to univariate regression analysis to generate the linear forecasting equation. The findings revealed that autoregressive models are generated from the current and past data and can be used to forecasting future business performance. However, the accuracy of these equations relies on the quality of data and the stability of the industry. Therefore, the results of this inquiry contribute to the existing literature on forecasting models. Policy planners can use the information to improve the accuracy of their prediction models.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the differences in travel behaviours and attitudes toward factors affecting travel decisions between Generation (Gen) Y and generation Z Thai tourists. Moreover, this study proposes a tourism marketing strategy to promote tourism for both generations. The samples size of this study was 400 Gen Y and generation Z Thai tourists. The online questionnaire was used to collect data through Facebook fan pages. The result yielded that Gen Y and Gen Z Thai tourists shared many similar travel behaviours, such as travel objectives, transportation, the season of traveling, favourite areas, days of travel, frequency, and sources of information. The author recommended that cultural tourism, eco-tourism, and adventure tourism would fit the needs of these cohorts. Influencer marketing should be implemented to encourage sales promotion toward these generations. Moreover, the popular type of social media should be used to fit with the character of each generation.

Abstract

Due to growth of economy, government policies, available inexpensive smart devices and low cost broadband services in both developed and developing countries the numbers of Internet users are increasing drastically over the last decades. Recently, the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0 have become global trends. Through Internet of Things (IoT) everyone will be connected his/her devices at home, at work stations, on road, at field or anywhere else. In a network topology, various protocols are used for forwarding the packets. Routes of information (packets) are established by appropriate routing protocols. A routing table is managed by the router for successful delivery of packets from the exact predefined nodes i.e. source node to destination node.  The amount of information stored by the router about the network depends on the algorithm it follows. Most of the used popular routing algorithms are RIP, OSPF, IGRP and EIGRP. In this report, we have tried to evaluate the performance of RIP, OSPF, IGRP and EIGRP for the parameters: convergence, throughput, queuing delay and end to end delay utilization through simulation which has been performed using OPNET. We have tried to find out the best protocol suits for the designed Enterprise Local Area Network (ELAN) as well as pros and cons of each protocol.
